Chapter 415: Changes
Kate noticed this and immediately asked curiously, "Who is it?"
It was not often that she saw such an expression on Lina’s face. Therefore, she was wondering who it was that was calling that made Lina react that way.
"The team captain, Alex. I’m not sure what he wants, because the month is not yet over. Unless there is a change within the organization, it is unusual for him to make a call." Lina shook her head as she responded.
Previously, at the training camp of NEXUS, the information on all the recruits had been collected. This obviously included their contact details.
It was through the email that Alex reached them, giving them the news about the successful formation of the team. He then sent them the identification card for each one of them.
Of course, it was the smart ID, which would allow them to be able to do a lot with the identity of the organization. Of course, on the ID, there was no name of the organization.
But the moment that someone accessed the government database, they would immediately realize that the person holding that ID was special.
The two of them had already tried it out, with Lina leading the way with her computer skills. It was quite easy for her to be able to hack into the police database.
The smart identification card displayed the holder’s photograph, full name, government identification number, and security clearance level. It did not reveal the name of the organization. Instead, it identified the holder only as possessing special government authority.
An encrypted chip and secure digital authentication allowed authorized government scanners to verify the card, confirming the holder’s identity and access privileges while keeping the issuing organization classified.
The card was further protected by a holographic government seal and other anti-counterfeiting features, ensuring that only legitimate personnel could use it.
This was something that surprised even Kate, as she had not anticipated that the authority that NEXUS held was this high.
Previously, with the information that she had gotten from Michael, she understood that NEXUS could have helped her take revenge. And that was actually true, as with the current abilities that she possessed, it would have been easy for her to be able to take revenge.
With the intelligence department of the organization, it would not have been that difficult for her to be able to find the information on Bob. And just by finding all the dirty information on Bob, it would have been easy for her to be able to deal with him.
Of course, she liked the fact that she had to deal with that guy in a straightforward way, with Michael’s help.
Regardless, at this point, she realized, this organization really held quite some power. She was not sure on how big the power held was, but she realized, she could go with this path.
While having strength was incredible, at times, connections were important as well. Therefore, she thought, even though Michael already had connections within the organization, if she could advance her position, it would be even better.
She was not sure about the types of abilities the other members of the organization possessed. But she believed that the ability that she had possessed incredible potential.
And according to the information that she possessed on the organization, it was clear that most of the time, the position that a person held usually depended on their own strength.
Back to the present, Kate was also curious about why Alex was looking for them. Could it be that there were some changes, and they needed to go back?
At the thought of this, Kate felt unwilling. After all, she had only been back for a few days. She was not ready to go back. That was especially considering that she had not yet spent enough time with Michael and her mother.
While she was thinking about this, Lina went ahead and received the call. Of course, she did not put the call on loudspeaker, as they were currently in a public place.
But even then, with the enhanced hearing through her ability, Kate was able to listen in on the conversation between the two of them.
"Hello, captain." Lina greeted, her voice calm.
Alex’s voice came from the other end, enthusiastic, "Okay, since our team only has three people, I decided that we will start training early. According to the information that I have, it seems that you are currently in the capital.
I will be there in 3 hours, so, you can wait for me. I would like us to discuss some plans. And by the way, I would like to let you know about some of the secrets of the organization.
I have a plan of having the strongest team in the entire organization. Therefore, if we aim for something like that, we will have to start making early preparations."
Lina’s expression did not change in the slightest. It seemed that she had already anticipated this as she asked in a flat tone, "But I thought that we were having a break for one month?"
With the level of skills and abilities that she possessed, she did not need to associate herself with NEXUS. But she was doing this mainly because of Kate.
If not for the fact that Kate was interested in this organization, Lina would have advised her so that they could do something else instead.
With her responsibility being Kate safety, of course, wherever Kate went, that was where she would go as well. Additionally, she found Kate to be quite fun, and she genuinely liked her.
Because of this, she could endure doing all this boring stuff. At least, having someone do it with her made it not so unpleasant.
Alex on the other end of the call was silent for a moment before he sighed. "I really did not expect this before I gave you a month off. It is just that after I completed all the procedures required for the creation of a new team, I was given the goals that I need to achieve.
With my strength, some of those things can be easily completed. It is just that some of these things require the cooperation of you two ladies.
This is why I have no choice but to come looking for you. But don’t worry, I have no any intention of preventing you from enjoying yourselves. You can continue having a vacation, but I might call you guys from time to time."
Lina immediately understood that she had to play her role. Therefore, despite how Alex was seemingly easy to talk to, she understood that at the moment, Alex was her superior. Because of this, she was not supposed to question him too much.
Hence, she pretended to be disappointed, but eventually she agreed, "Okay, no problem."
Alex obviously noticed the disappointment in her voice. But even then, he just said, "I’m sure that the two of you are together. So, you can inform Kate about what I just told you. In a few hours, I will be there in the capital. I hope to meet you two ladies so that I can inform you of some information that I cannot tell you over the phone."
"Sure, I’ll make sure to let her know." Lina responded before the call ended.
Kate had obviously listened in on the conversation, as she fell into a moment of thought. A little while later, realizing that Lina was staring at her, she looked back at her, puzzled.
"Is there something on my face?" She asked as she touched her face, a confused expression on her face.
"Not really. It is just that I’m wondering, what are you thinking of? Could it be that you are so eager to take on the missions? Maybe, do you intend to start dealing with mutants, instead of these ordinary crooks?" Lina shook her head as she asked.
"Well, I was kind of thinking that way. You know, I realized that the best way for me to improve is to face challenges. Just training inside the training chamber is not enough." Kate responded.
Ever since she found out that Lina was sent over by Michael to protect her, she trusted her. This was mainly because of how casual Lina acted around Michael.
Clearly, the relationship between the two of them was close. Because of this, with her trust in Michael’s judgment of character, she believed that he would not send someone that he did not trust close to her.
Because of this, she revealed her abilities, only to end up realizing that Lina already knew about it long ago. Of course, it was a little embarrassing thinking about how she had been trying to hide her full capabilities from Lina back at the training camp dormitory.
Nevertheless, ever since she realized that she could trust Lina, the relationship between the two of them had improved drastically.
"That really seems to be the case. Anyway, there are a lot of mutants out there. We can just target a few of them, especially those that break the rules.
According to the rules of the organization, we can act against any mutant who is not following the unwritten rules. But of course, we still have to make sure that we are not exposed to the public." Lina replied thoughtfully.
"So, should we wait for Alex to come over first, get to hear what he has to say, before leaving? Or, is there a way of finding a mutant that we can deal with within the city?" Kate asked with great anticipation.
