Chapter 319: The Second Segment

"I have my own methods, you don’t need to worry about that. Anyway, if the police are involved in this, you will inevitably be needed to give a statement, but you need to know what to say." Michael shook his head as he responded.

Even though Alex and the others had a lot of questions, they trusted Michael. From all the things that he had demonstrated, it was clear that the methods that he possessed were not what they could imagine.

Therefore, since Michael had said so, then that had to be how it would be. Hence, they only thought about what he had said, that it was Jack and his group who came here, had a conflict amongst each other, before they began fighting.

"By the way, I will send each of you a video footage, so that you can all be on the same page. This can at least make sure that when giving statements, you don’t contradict each other." Michael thought of something and said.

Alex and the group were relieved, as this would make things easier. But even then, they were quite curious about how Michael would be able to create the footage.

Currently, there was technology to use someone’s face to create a video. But, most of them, once an expert checked, it would be quite easy to see that some of them are just AI generated videos.

But of course, it was a different thing when it came to Onyx. Onyx was currently the best AI in this world, making it impossible for anyone to be able to tell that the video that it could create was generated by an AI.

This was why Michael was confident that this would work out, and at least spare them some troubles.

"Okay, where are we going to next? Or are you planning to continue with the shooting competition?" Michael changed the topic.

"I’m no longer in the mood to compete against you guys. So, why don’t we just head somewhere else? Let’s go and have some fun." Dalton was the one who responded this time.

The others thought the same. At the moment, none of them would concentrate enough to be able to completely showcase their skills.

So, it would be much better if they did something else at the moment, and then when their minds settled, they would come back to compete again.

"So, where should we go? I literally have no idea of a good place that we can go to, somewhere that it will not be boring." Raymond questioned.

After he asked that, everyone fell into a moment of contemplation, thinking of where to go to. And one by one, they began making suggestions, while others immediately refuted those ideas, while some were entertained.

Eventually, several destinations were decided on, including the underground fighting arena, the very same one that they had gone together with Michael, and won big.

....

<The time is up! Everyone, head to the infirmary, and prepare yourself for the next segment of the assessment!>

The announcement echoed throughout the training camp, leading to the remaining recruits to all head towards the direction of the infirmary.

With over an hour to wait, quite a number of people had already changed their minds. Initially, they had the conviction, willing to take the risk, but now, everything had changed.

Within this one hour that they had been given, they had been thinking about many things, and eventually, they thought that it was not worth it to take the risks.

So, some of them had already gone to the administration block of the training camp, to try and see if they could be allowed to go back. But in the end, they were left disappointed, as Peter informed them that they could not change the decision that they had made.

That was especially considering that the preparations for the next segment of the assessment had already been made. And the preparations were made according to the number of recruits present.

With the preparations already complete, it was impossible to waste the resources, as it was too costly.

Peter even warned them, telling them, if they thought about running away, they would still be forced to undergo the next assessment. After all, it was a decision that they had made, and he had given them a warning, back then when he gave them the chance to choose what they wanted.

Kate and Lina had been walking around the training camp. Kate had been feeling a little restless over the past hour, as she was thinking about making a call to Michael.

But unfortunately, because they could no longer enter the dormitories, it was impossible for her to be able to do that.

Therefore, she could only hope that Michael would do something about Lina. For her case, Michael had already told her that everything would be fine. And because she trusted him, she believed that her safety would not be compromised.

But this might not be the same with Lina. Even though Kate was sure that Lina was hiding something from her, at least, until now, Lina had only shown her goodwill.

So, when the announcement was made, while heading towards the infirmary together with Lina, she was kind of absent-minded. She tripped against a rock almost falling, but thankfully, Lina managed to hold her, preventing her from falling.

"Hey, what are you thinking about? Don’t tell me that you are reconsidering your decision? Are you perhaps worried that you might not be able to see your boyfriend again?" Lina asked jokingly as she helped Kate stabilize herself.

"Hey, can you at least stop with all this teasing? And by the way, are you not worried about the dangers involved in the next segment of the assessment? You know, they told us that the probability of dying is as high as about 42%." Kate was quite puzzled about this.

This entire time, she had not seen a situation where Lina was worried, not even once. She was so carefree, continuously joking.

And by the way, she was trying to cheer her up, even though Kate was only worried about her...

"What is there to worry about? It is not as if by worrying, we can change anything, right? Since the decision has already been made, we have to go through with it.

You know, even if you change your mind right now, you cannot escape the same fate, and it might be even worse. So, it would be much better to just go with the flow, and not think much about it." Lina shrugged as she responded.

Kate could only shake her head at that. This kind of mindset, she doubted that she could have thoughts like that. Still, she thought that what Lina had said made sense.

Since they could not avoid it, then just go with it. The only thing that she could do at the moment was to pray that nothing would happen, at least nothing would go wrong.

Eventually, the two ladies began chatting about different things, while heading towards the infirmary. A few minutes later, they got there, realizing that there were already three people, who had arrived before them.

The infirmary building had a modern design, built from reinforced concrete and smooth, light-colored panels that gage it a sterile, clinical look. Its structure was compact, with sharp lines and minimal decoration.

At the front, wide automatic doors sat beneath a lit overhang, marked by a bright medical insignia. The windows were narrow, tinted, and reinforced.

Along the sides, ventilation systems and secured staff entrances could be seen, while an emergency bay at the rear that allowed for quick access for stretchers or vehicles was available.

Subtle details, like rooftop antennas, integrated solar panels, and climate control units, gave the building a high-tech presence, and this was one of the most advanced facilities in the camp.

At the moment, Peter was standing in front of the building, obviously waiting for the recruits to arrive. It did not take long, before the other recruits arrived.

The total number of recruits remaining was 9, and all of them had arrived. And as Kate looked around, she realized that everyone had a different expression on their faces.

Some looked nervous, some scared, while one of them seemed to be anticipating what was coming. And there was even someone that was already trembling visibly, clearly, this guy was so scared of what was going to happen next.

Seeing that everyone had arrived, Peter began speaking, "As I previously informed you, the next segment is going to be both a danger and an opportunity.

This time, you don’t really need to do anything, as it mostly depends on your luck. If you are lucky, you are going to get something better, but if not, you might end up losing your life.

I will not try to lie to you that we can surely save you in case your life is at risk. But something that I can guarantee is that, the medical staff will definitely try everything in their power to save you."

After saying those words, Peter paused for a moment, waiting for his words to sink in. He observed the expressions of every recruit in front of him, before eventually continuing.

"Now then, I guess you need to be informed about what is going to happen in the next segment. For the next segment of the assessment, you will all need to cooperate with the medical staff.

You are all going to receive an injection, a serum, which is going to grant you something that you have only ever dreamed of or watched in those sci-fi movies." Peter said, his face expressionless, but his voice was tinged with excitement.
