Chapter 519: Ulysses
When Henwell enters the shelter chamber while maintaining his guard, he cannot help freezing.
There are none of the many ambushes he imagined, nor are there any deadly mechanisms.
There are not even guards. The room is not large, only a little over a hundred square meters, and most of what is stored here consists of survival supplies.
A person slumps in a chair at the back of the room.
The person there is the core of the entire operation, the king of Billie, the pawn of the Veil, the fallen ruler: Ulysses!
At this moment, Ulysses leans against the chair with his eyes closed.
Henwell thinks something is wrong and quickly steps forward to examine Ulysses's condition.
After checking him over, Henwell finally breathes a sigh of relief.
Ulysses is only unconscious, not dead. That is good news.
If Ulysses had died, the entire operation would have gained a massive stain.
So many elite warriors have died, only for the primary target to be killed. This will cause relations between the Western Federation and the eastern countries to plummet.
Then Henwell, as the person in charge of the operation, will bear the main responsibility.
In addition, if Ulysses truly had died, no matter who had done it, Henwell would have to take the blame.
This will make Henwell bear tremendous pressure from various countries. This is an actual king with real authority.
How will the kings around Peace Haven view this matter?
Would there be a day when Henwell also brings people over and causes them to die?
In short, a living Ulysses is the relatively best result for Henwell.
Ulysses is very weak now, and his internal organs are damaged. It should have been caused by the earlier explosion.
Henwell searches through the shelter chamber, finds some extraordinary potions, identifies their effects, and feeds them to Ulysses.
After all, these are supplies prepared for royal refuge. The rank and quality of the potions are both very high, and Ulysses soon shows obvious improvement.
After a while longer, Ulysses slowly wakes up. When he opens his eyes, he sees Henwell before him.
Then Ulysses looks around and cannot help smiling at Henwell. "Henwell! You really are impressive."
"I think no one expected that you were actually a Glory Knight."
"To have such a calm temperament at such a young age is truly rare."
Henwell raises an eyebrow. "Your Majesty, you are that certain?"
Ulysses says, "Is it not obvious? Since you are able to find this place, it proves that you have already defeated Morris, the High Priest of the Veil."
Henwell says, "Could it not have been a professional from the church?"
Ulysses shakes his head. "Of course not. If professionals from the church and the Empire were here, you would not be the only one present."
After saying this, Ulysses waves a hand at Henwell. "Do not worry. I have no interest in your secret. Everyone has secrets."
"If we do not want others to know our secrets, then we must learn to respect other people's secrets."
"I will not tell anyone that you are a Glory Knight. You need not worry."
Henwell corrects him. "I am not a Glory Knight. I am still an Iron Knight."
"Then that is even more impressive. It proves that at the Iron Rank, you can defeat a Glory Rank professional, or at least force the other party away!"
"Once you advance to the Glory Rank, who on this continent will still be your match?"
"Most importantly, you are still young. Right, Henwell, how old are you this year?"
Henwell says, "A few more months and I will be twenty-five."
Ulysses sighs. "Twenty-five. How wonderful. That is the most beautiful age."
"Henwell, if only you were my son-in-law. During the Corpse Reclamation War, you should not have hidden your talent."
Henwell shrugs. "If I had gone to you back then, what could you have given me?"
"Would you also have let me build up a Peace Haven? Or could you have given me the kingdom?"
Ulysses laughs aloud. "Heh... why not? Do you think I am that gambler Amir?"
"Only allowing himself to win, yet unable to see the longer-term benefits?"
"If you married Catherine, I could hand the kingdom over to you. After all, your children would also carry the bloodline of the Celtic family!"
Henwell feels a very strange sensation. He realizes Ulysses truly is not lying.
Ulysses continues, "Henwell, if I gave you the kingdom, to what extent could you go?"
Henwell remains silent. Ulysses shakes his head. "Henwell, do not be so guarded. We can all see your ambition. What is there to hide?"
"Ambition is not necessarily a bad thing. If you do not even have ambition, then you are simply unworthy of being a king!"
"Come. Let me see how broad your kingly heart truly is, or rather, just how great your ambition is!"
Henwell raises his head. "Twenty years."
Ulysses nods slightly. "Not bad. In twenty years, you could annex the territory of a kingdom. That is no small ambition."
"I imagine you would choose to make a move against Ogiro and swallow that piece of meat first."
"Then you would ally with Vorry and have them attack Ika, while you annex the Lumir Duchy once more."
"Vorry and you would then divide Ika, and finally decide the victor between yourselves, or simply remain in a stalemate."
At this point, Ulysses changes the subject. "However, there is one point where you are wrong."
"Although the plan is very good, the Western Federation will not allow a great empire to appear on the continent!"
Henwell grins. "Your Majesty, I think you are also wrong. You have misunderstood what I just said."
"When I said twenty years, I did not mean that in twenty years I would annex the territory of a kingdom."
"I meant that in twenty years, my spearhead will point directly at the Western Federation, and I will become the lord of the continent!"
"I will be an emperor who unifies the continent, a supreme emperor!"
This time it is Ulysses's turn to freeze. Looking at Henwell's firm and confident eyes, he seems to see his younger self.
Ulysses smiles and shakes his head. "How fascinating. You are very much like me when I was young."
"But at that time, I did not know the immensity of heaven and earth. You are different. You have both ability and mind."
"What a pity."
"I will not have the chance to see the rise of an empire, nor the birth of an emperor."
At this point, Ulysses puts away his smile and looks at Henwell with a solemn expression.
"Henwell! If one day you truly can unify the continent, I hope you can promise me one thing."
"I do not ask for much. I hope you will spare Catherine's life."
"She is too strong-willed. I understand her. If she cannot obtain you, she will try to prove that she is stronger than you."
"But from every angle, this proud daughter of mine cannot defeat a young dragon like you."
Henwell nods slightly. "Your Majesty worries too much. Catherine and I are friends. I will not hurt her."
"If, and I mean if, one day I truly have to meet Billie on the battlefield..."
"And if I am lucky enough to win, I will preserve the bloodline of the Celtic family."
Ulysses shakes his head. "Not the Celtic family. Only Catherine herself."
Seeing Henwell's confusion, Ulysses sighs. "Henwell, do you still not understand? I am going to die."
