Chapter Forty-Four: Day of the Animals
The Antoco act is a law that forbids Samurai from joining the same group or forming groups in by them self. This law was put in place so that Samurai would not take over cities or country and becoming a dictatorship. This law stood for exactly eight hours before being completely disregarded because someone pointed out that Samurai like Trash Bandit. Fox Fire and the Dread Queen already controlled large territories while working mostly alone.
But if you ask me, they just removed the law because no one wanted to enforce such a stupid rule.
-- List of the weirdest law in recent history provided by The Purple Truth.
Packing up the doctor's stuff was a lot easier than expected. Apparently, Katherin doesn't own that much stuff. Her three plant blankets and half a closet of clothing easily fit into the ambulance. After arriving back at headquarters, we first put her belongings in her new room, and then we head up to the floor above to set up an office space.
Which, honestly, took the longest amount of time. Thinking of the required furniture for the room. Then ordering it with same-day protector shipping, and then the endless adjusting until it is just perfect.
“Overall, that went smoother than expected.” I say as I wipe my brow.
“It helps that you are strong,” Katherin says.
“Yeah, well, a lot of my body is made out of metal, so that makes it a lot easier.” I say with a smile, as I pet the snow leopard that is lounging on the couch.
Katherine looks a bit concerned. “Are you okay?”
“Don’t worry, most of it was for precaution, rather than because of severe damage.”
“Most?”
“Yeah, most.” I confirm.
Katherine gives me a weird look, but before she can get into it, there is a knock on the door, and Lemar walks in, followed closely by Angela, who is carrying Tucker.
“You wanted to see us?” Lemar says as he spots me.
I smile as I stand up a bit straighter, “Yeah, thank you for coming. This is Doctor Katherine Noir, our new therapist.” I say, gesturing at the woman. “Doctor, this is my brother and sister and my nephew.” I say, pointing them out.
Angela's eyes go wide. "You already found one? That was fast.”
I grin. “I am always fast.”
“Always?” Lemar asks with a smirk.
I nod. “Pretty much. I mean, I can teleport.”
“Kitty!” Tucker suddenly shouts out, as he stares at the snow leopard.
“Yeah, it is. Want to pet it?” I say as I crouch down in front of him.
“Is it safe?” Angela asks, sounding a bit unsure.
“Totally, the cat was created with protector bull… magic,” I say.
Angela nods, then hands me Tucker, which is unexpected since I am not really sure how to hold children at all. But I guess as long as I don’t drop him, we should be fine. I slowly walk over to the lounging cat and crouch down so that Tucker can pet the cat.
The cat, being the big sweetheart that it is, rolls over, allowing the boy to pet its soft belly while letting out a loud purring sound. Tucker starts to laugh in that high-pitched laugh that only children have.
“It looks like she likes you,” I say as I look up.
Angela and Lemar are both smiling and even Katherin seems somewhat amused by all this. Tucker just keeps stroking the beastie, giggling all the while. After a bit of time, I carefully set him down, making sure to keep my scanners on him to make sure he is safe.
“So, Doctor, if you don’t mind, I would like you to start treating my sister as soon as possible.” I say, turning to Noir.
“I gathered that, but therapy isn't quick. She will require a lot of time and it isn't something we should rush into like this.” Katherine explains. “I need to set up my office and then set up treatment plans.”
“Right, sorry, I just got a bit too excited, I guess. My mistake.” I say, feeling my face heat up. “Do you need anything else, or are you good?”
“I think I've got everything to help me get started. I need to finish reading the contract and set up some stuff, but I should be able to get some patients tomorrow. So you are free to go.”
I nod and pick up Tucker “It’s time to say bye to little Snowball and let the good doctor work now.” I whisper to him.
“Bye, Snowball,” he says, as he waves with his tiny arm.
We slowly move out, but before I can turn the corner, I hear Kathrine shout “Evelin?!”
I pop my head back into her office. “Yes?”
“Tomorrow at eleven, I want to see Maniac in my office. So, please make sure she is here?”
“I will try my best, but she can be a pain sometimes.”
As I walk away from the door, Lemar asks. “Aren’t you, like, Maniac in a way? So isn’t that going to be easy?”
“I guess, but she doesn't know that. I am still her reliable boss, for now.”
“And what will happen when she finds out you are Maniac?”
“Same thing as when other employees find out; they stop asking me for stuff, and ask one of the other Samurai instead. Honestly, not really sure it's a bad thing, really.”
“That sounds irresponsible.” Lemar says while giving me a look.
“I mean, maybe, if I was in charge of anything, but I am more the wrecking ball that is thrown at problems, as well as a deterrent.”
“Deterrent?”
“Yeah, since you know, if people know that this is my company, they are significantly less likely to mess with it.”
Lemar snaps his fingers. “Like a ‘beware of dog’ sign.” He exclaims.
I narrow my eyes. “I am going to pretend that was a compliment.”
Lemar nods. “Yeah, it definitely was. Anyway, now that we are not going to do therapy, what's next on the agenda?”
“I don’t know.” I look at Tucker, who I am still holding. “Want to see my kitty?” I ask the boy.
Tucker nods enthusiastically, “Kitty.”
“You have a cat?” Lemar asks
“Well, it is part of the feline family, so kind of.” I venture.
“That makes it sound like it is some kind of wild animal.” He complains.
I give him a wink. “Now you get it.”
“Is it safe?” Angela asks.
“Definitely, Daisy is very nice, and likes to play with children, so there is nothing to worry about,” I say with a smile.
With that settled, we quickly enter the elevator and head up to the penthouse. The living room is empty when we enter, except for Daisy, who is sleeping in an oversized dog bed. I slowly walk up to her, so as not to startle her.
Once I get close, I notice her open her eyes slightly, and I smile, putting Tucker down beside her. The little boy starts to pet her flank lightly, and I also start scratching her under her chin.
“Hey girl, are you still tired from yesterday?” I coo to the beast.
Daisy just lets out a high-pitched giggle-like sound.
“This place is nice.. Is it yours?” Lemar asks, while looking around the big open space.
“I don’t own anything. This house belongs to my girlfriend.” I explain while looking toward the home office. The door is closed, so she is probably busy.
Lemar lets out a low whistle, “Your girlfriend must be loaded or something.”
I shrug. “Probably, yeah. She is, like, good at the whole corporate thing.” I say, as I notice Angela slowly get closer. “Do you want to pet her too? Don’t worry. She doesn't bite.”
“Uhm, I just,... yes.” she gets out.
I smile, “Go ahead.” I say, gesturing at Daisy, who has become a bit more alert, turning her head to the side.
Angela slowly walks over, kneeling down and petting Daisy's back. "She's so soft,” Angela says with a smile on her face. Seeing that makes a warm feeling in my chest.
“Yeah, she is. It feels nice, especially her mane.” I say.
I observe them for a while before I walk up to Lemar. "You don’t want to pet the cat?”
“Saying that is a cat, is like calling a bear a dog.” He says.
“I mean, I didn't make it up, that's for sure. Then again, the rules of biology might as well be arbitrary to a Samurai.”
Lemar nods. “Yeah, I never really considered the fact that you can just go, ’fuck it. I am going to do this now.’”
“You would think so, but there are still a lot of things I have to do. I have to open an orphanage. Luckily, one of the other Samurai is working on it, so I am just going to steal his homework for the most part. Then there is also my revenge plan, that has been put on the back burner for way too long.”
“Really, that sounds somewhat normal. I thought you would be more the kind of person with a big list of wild things on it.”
I shake my head. “Not really. There is the trip to Africa I should be planning, but that was more of a promise and not exactly ‘impossible list’ worthy, just expensive.”
“Nice. Are you thinking of proposing to your girl on that trip?”
I blink, “I am going there because I lost a bet to a twelve-year-old, so it is a fun adventure type thing rather than a romantic getaway.”
He chuckles slightly at that. “Still sounds fun, regardless.”
“Yeah, it probably will be. Want to come along?”
Lemar whips his head around. “Really, just like that?”
“I mean, a lot of people are probably going to tag along, like the girl's parents and little brother, and then we have to invite the rest of the kids and their parents.” I count off on my hands. “So yeah, I would love an extra babysitter.”
He gives me a long, hard look. “I feel like there's a catch in there somewhere, but I can’t see it, so I would like to come.”
“The catch is that you haven't met the kids, and they might be a lot. Also, wild animals instead of pets,” I gesture at Daisy, who has rolled on her back, showing her belly. “So, we must pay extra attention to ensure they won’t try to pet them.”
“You think that's going to be an issue?” he asks, having some kind of image in his head.
“I really don’t know. The kids are rather smart, but then again, they are kids, and I only see them once in a while, so who knows?”
“I guess you are the definition of a fun aunt.” He says, then pauses, “Or the crazy aunt.”
“I see no reason why I can’t be both,” I say with a smile.
“Fair enough.”
It stays silent for a while before I speak up again. Then I take a deep breath.
“Hey, I am thinking of having a kid of my own, but I am still unsure about some things. Is that bad?”
Lemar raises an eyebrow. “Unsure about what?”
“Like if I can be a proper mom and keep her safe and everything.”
“You're a Samurai. Sure, that might bring some danger, but not anymore than a normal child in this world would have to endure, and you at least have Samurai tech to keep them safe.”
“Right, I guess that makes sense,” I say, while fidgeting with the edge of my shirt.
“I feel like there is something else wrong. Do you not want a kid?”
“No, that isn't it. I like the idea of a tiny human. It is just,I don’t know if I will be a good mom , what if I break her?”
Lemar just sighs, “Don’t take this the wrong way, because I think you would be a wonderful mom, but I don’t think it matters. I mean, most kids these days are raised by nanny AI because their parents are way too busy, so as long as you give your kid good food and a decent nanny bot, you are already doing okay. The fact that you don’t have to work and actually get to spend time with them only makes it better.”
I smile. “Thank you. I am still doubtful. What if something happens to me?”
“I mean, the other Samurai would probably help take care of them, and if not, I will,” He says with conviction.
I let out a deep breath, feeling a weight lift off my shoulders. “You are so right. Thanks”
