Chapter 626: Different Truth
Lana coughed softly, attracting both Rick and the maid’s attention.
Rick quickly wiped away the tears from his eyes and turned toward Lana.
"Whoever you are, please leave. I am not interested in speaking with anyone right now."
He stopped midway through his sentence. His eyes widened as he stared at Lana’s face. "I see... It’s you."
Lana smiled. "It is nice to see that you took my advice."
Rick was completely stunned. "You are that angel who rescued me."
Lana chuckled softly.
"I’m not an angel. I’m just a normal human being. Anyway, I heard about your daughter’s condition. I thought we only needed to look after her and help her recover."
Rick slowly came back to his senses, and a bitter smile appeared on his face.
"There is no use. She will never recover, and I don’t want to keep forcing her to go through this."
He turned toward the head maid.
"Please lead Miss Lana away from this mess. I’m leaving first."
The head maid remained silent as she watched Rick walk away.
Lana stared at his retreating back for a moment before turning toward the head maid.
"Can you give me a brief explanation of what is going on?"
The head maid fell silent.
After a few seconds, she finally looked at Lana with a serious expression.
"I will explain everything. However, I need a promise from you first."
Lana raised an eyebrow.
"What promise?"
The head maid clasped her hands tightly in front of herself.
"You have to promise that you will cure our young miss and make sure that every ghost haunting this house is completely expelled."
Lana sighed and said, "That is a big promise to make, especially when I do not even know what is going on here."
The head maid’s expression softened slightly as she replied, "Then I will explain everything."
With that, she began telling Lana the story. It turned out that Rick had once lived with a very happy family consisting of his wife, his daughter, and himself.
They had been an ordinary but loving family, until one day their daughter contracted a mysterious illness. As the days passed, the little girl grew weaker and weaker, her once lively face becoming pale as her body slowly withered away.
Rick’s wife could not bear to watch her daughter suffer any longer. Desperate to save her, she decided to donate one of her own organs to the girl.
However, the procedure eventually led to her death, while her daughter’s condition only continued to deteriorate.
Now, Rick was on the verge of losing everyone he loved, and the thought of it had left him consumed by worry and grief.
When Lana finished listening, she remained silent for a while, letting the head maid’s words settle heavily in her mind.
Finally, she looked at her and said, "Did you ever consider that Rick’s wife’s ghost might be haunting this place?"
Hearing that, the head maid slowly nodded. "Multiple times. I often wonder if it is our madam who comes here to visit her daughter."
Lana’s eyes narrowed in surprise. "What do you mean?"
The head maid took a quiet breath before explaining,
"When our madam was alive, this was her routine. She used to prepare lunch at noon and finish by twelve-thirty. Afterward, she would wash her clothes with her own hands. It was rather interesting because Rick was allergic to detergent, so she always washed the clothes herself. She would also take the little young miss outside and play with her on the swing."
A faint chill passed through Lana as she listened. The details were oddly mundane for something that had supposedly become a ghost’s routine.
Lana narrowed her gaze and said, "All right, then. Tonight, I will stay here and watch what happens."
The head maid looked at Lana with a serious expression.
"If you are able to cure our young miss, it would be a tremendous favor to all of us. I would never forget your help, and if you ever need my assistance in the future, I will help you in return."
Lana studied her quietly. There was something about the head maid that felt unusual.
The way she spoke, the calmness with which she discussed such frightening matters, and the weight behind her promise all made Lana feel that her background was far more complicated than she was willing to reveal.
Lana waved her hand dismissively and said, "You have already provided one hundred million dollars as payment. If an exorcism is required, I will charge for that separately. Other than that, I do not need anything from you."
That evening, Lana returned to Lucian’s library to borrow the books and then made her way back to Rick’s house.
Once she arrived, the mansion felt unusually quiet. Lana opened the book she had brought with her and began reading at exactly 11:30 p.m.
She occasionally glanced toward the servants as they continued finishing their duties. When the time drew closer to midnight, Lana finally walked toward the head maid and said, "Dismiss all of them."
The head maid paused and looked at her. "Are you sure? The madam seems to be in a very vengeful mood, and she might do something that could harm you."
Lana waved her hand calmly. "I am a mystical cultivator. Nothing will happen to me."
She paused for a moment before adding, "Whatever happens here tonight, do not let anyone come back. Make sure that nobody remains in this area."
For the first time, the head maid’s expression turned grim. She stared at Lana for several seconds before giving a serious nod.
"All right."
Once the head maid left, Lana remained alone in the living room. She quietly sighed as the silence settled around her. Finally, at exactly midnight, the clock struck twelve.
The sound echoed through the mansion. A moment later, the faint sound of footsteps traveled down the corridor.
Lana immediately stood up and followed the sound.
Unlike the others, who could not see anything unusual, Lana clearly saw a woman walking through the hallway.
She wore a beautiful light-blue dress that seemed almost translucent beneath the dim moonlight. Her hair was neatly tied into a bun, revealing a delicate and elegant face.
She looked graceful, refined, and beautiful, almost as though she had simply stepped out of an old family portrait. The moment the woman entered the room, she noticed Lana.
A gentle smile appeared on her lips. "You are here to accompany my daughter."
Lana smiled and nodded.
The woman’s expression immediately changed. She looked genuinely stunned, as though she could not believe that someone could not only hear her but actually see her.
After a brief silence, she asked, "Can you become a medium between my daughter and me? I want to speak with her."
Lana agreed with a small nod. "I can do that, but for now, you need to follow your usual routine, right?"
The ghost paused before looking at Lana with a soft smile. "Yes, I do."
She turned around and walked toward the kitchen. Once there, she opened the drawers and began taking out utensils.
Lana’s eyes flickered as she observed them closely. ’Those are not real utensils.’
Every object the woman touched was merely a spiritual copy of the original items, created from the remnants of her lingering soul.
The ghost continued preparing the food as though she were still alive. Lana watched silently as she cooked the dishes with practiced familiarity. Once she finished, she carefully carried the food upstairs.
Lana followed behind her.
Throughout the journey, the woman remained silent, almost as though she could no longer see Lana at all. Her entire attention was focused on the routine she had repeated countless times while she was alive.
Finally, they arrived at the little girl’s room. The ghost gently knocked on the door. "Come and have some food."
The little girl, who had been lying motionless on the bed, suddenly opened her eyes. Her body did not move.
Instead, something slowly separated from it. A translucent soul emerged from the little girl’s body.
Lana’s expression changed slightly when she saw it, but she did not say anything.
The soul walked toward the ghost and took the bowl of food from her hands. The woman smiled lovingly and gently wiped the soup from the soul’s mouth when it dripped down its chin.
Once she finished, she reached out her hand. The little girl’s soul followed her.
Lana remained where she was.
Instead of following them immediately, she turned toward the girl’s physical body and gently shook her shoulder.
The next second, the little girl blinked. Her eyes slowly focused on Lana. "Please let me die. I do not want to live anymore."
The moment she recognised Lana, tears began streaming down her cheeks. She suddenly threw her arms around Lana and sobbed against her.
"Beautiful sister, please let me die. I do not want to live anymore."
Lana closed her eyes.
At that moment, she finally understood what was happening.
’The truth is completely different from what they believe.’
