Chapter 42: Luscious
The entire guild went quiet when they heard those words. No one spoke for a while. They understood that Jake was the Chosen, and that meant the region—what was happening—this Trial was happening around him and not them. He was the focal point of this.
Jake saw that he had their attention, so he got on a table. He looked around at everyone there and spoke, "The situation that we have found ourselves in is honestly a terrible one, and in ways, the blame comes to me.
I didn’t expect the Trials to begin so early, else I would have stayed away from civilization as a whole to avoid something like this.
But here we are, and we don’t have a choice now. We have to face it."
"We do have a choice. We kill the girl and all this ends, right? We don’t even need to fight whatever monsters it is that the Trial will send," one man spoke. His voice was deep and heavy, resounding through the hall.
His face was covered, a thick finger geared, while his head was bald. He was a towering man over six feet, clad in armor with a battle axe on his back.
He rose from his table and marched toward Jake. The others cleared a path for him as his footsteps resounded. He stopped when he was only two meters away from Jake.
"Everyone here knows the weight of the Trials. It’s something that has been passed on for ages," he said, then spat out a seed that was in his mouth. He moved his hand to his axe, pulled it off his back, and brought it to his side.
"The Trial is no joke. Everyone knows that. And what that creature told us, it’s final. That’s the Whisper. My family once had a Chosen, and they know for certain that the Whisper ain’t to be toyed with.
