Chapter 690: Situation of the West I
Everyone knows that Belarion is the Noyan of the Brolgadhr tribe.
Most people did not have control of so many soldiers in Aeryon army
Belarion is the most trusted general of the Khan and that trust is not for nothing. One could claim it was nepotism and one would be dissatisfied if Belarion held the power simply because he is the sworn brother of the Khan
But that kind of dissatisfaction could only arise if Belarion was incompetent.
Belarion however was not incompetent
When he was appointed to the title and position none objected and instead from some news that the chief had heard, he was even applauded by the Elder Council of Brolgadhr.
Many young commanders also approve of it
Belarion is the kind of commander that could take heads amidst a thousand man and could rampage all over the battlefield.
Even the poisonous and crafty Nergui people could not withstand his attack and is pinned down and unable to send reinforcement to Chagai tribe
If not for this delay of sending reinforcement how could Aeryon forces easily breaches the lower western front.
They are still standing and even though there are some false news propagated by the Khan that the Nergui tribe is already collapsing, those who knows the true story knows that the Nergui could still fight
Out of the three tribes only the Chagai tribe seems to have the ability to turn the tide but with Chadha, its most brilliant chief they had in the past few hundred years dying because of illness, every chief in the Southern Great Steppe believes that the west would be conquered by the Brolgadhr.
This belief stems from the fact that Aeryon from the moment he raises his army had never lost a war.
And with the loss of the most capable mediator on the west, it seems that the conclusion could already be written
When Chadha was there, the chief that oppose Aeryon ambition still have hopes. And that hope is not some pointless hope.
Everyone knows Chadha methods are truly something that is unfathomable. Unlike Garron who is cunning, Chadha methods is quite above board and when he persuades people, he uses honesty
It is only the way he worded his words is like a craftsman crafting precious weapon or precious armour. He always knew what to say to persuade someone. He never needed to use lies when honesty alone is enough
It is why the chief of Ultar and chief of Nergui could put down their animosity and work together
If one knows the history of these two tribes, the fact that Chadha could broker such alliance means he is worthy of the title of the best mediator of the west.
Of course, there is also the fact that all three of them are related to each other and it is with this relationship that binds them together.
But when Chadha dies, this glue that keep the alliance together...is gone.
And those wise men all over the Southern Great Steppe could speculate based on this and they reached the conclusion that unless the Chagai new chief could command the same respect that his father had, the alliance would slowly falter under the Khan attack and schemes and plots.
At first, when Aeryon send his men to fight in the west, the forces still seems equal and to those who are discerning, they could even see that the west has many more advantages and in some of the skirmishes, the forces of the three great tribes even manage to win against Brolgadhr army.
And as more and more time passes, those western tribes would come to the aid of the three tribes.
When Chadha was on the reins, everyone feel this feeling.
In a way just like how Aeryon is the heart of the Brolgadhr and his rise and fall would affect his army, it is the same for Chadha.
He was the backbone of the Chagai tribe and he was the backbone of the Cha Ner Ul Alliance. With him, they could be united.
But the moment he dies, it was like all three tribes lost their heart.
And there is nothing easier than fighting an army that has lost its heart.
However, it would take a long time for Aeryon to settle this matter.
because even without their backbone, Ultar, Nergui tribe and the Chagai tribe are still a large tribe.
In the past they might not be a large tribe but after their alliance, these three tribes have been expanding their tribe’s region and influence.
The sphere of influence is what ammeters in the Steppe.
You could subdue a tribe but if you did not subdue their hearts, then it would be a problem in the long run.
So, even if the conclusion had bene written, the tribes of the Southern Great Steppe all hoped that the west would entangle the Khan for quite some time.
The west is not so easily conquered.
How many past overlords is stuck there?
The unity of the west is not something to scoff at and everyone thought it would take a long time for the Khan to disengage from this matter.
If all of the three tribes fight for survival then Aeryon would spend a lot of time there.
Either the Khan retreats and then finish the job in another year or find a strategy to break his strategy.
If the three tribes falls and being slaughtered by the Khan army, some western tribes would find a way to rally all of the western border tribes and once they could rally such forces, the Khan would not only be fighting the three tribes but he would be fighting all of the western border tribes
The west could be the place where the Khan got entangled.
The longer he is entangled the more time there is for the other forces to reorganize
But the most important thing about this delay is that the longer the Khan stay on the west, the more things become uncertain.
And the longer the Khan stays on the west, the more dissatisfied people would be. The Steppe warriors are accustomed to fast operation.
This is their advantage. But this is also their weakness.
The system of the Steppe did not allow them to leave their place for a long time.
In a small tribe a few raid and a few attack to an opposing tribe is expected to last for only a week or so.
A large tribe could field large horses and large host of warriors under many banners but even then, they would not linger far away from their main settlement because when the army is away then other tribes could come and attack
And when winter came, they have to either already have provision for the winter and the same for migration
Aeryon changes that method where he had garrisoned soldiers in his cities more like the people of Yan and of Roma.
Not to mention he had supplied the cities and bind the interest of the tribes under Brolgadhr making it almost like a city state.
But even so, they could not fight all throughout winter.
The morale would fall.
And this change that the Khan did is new.
It would take time before it could be accepted by everyone.
Most of the warriors still had to tend to their herd, tend to their servants and to their sheep’s, Tayak and horses.
That is what most people in the Southern Great Steppe is waiting.
Winter.
As long winter came and the quagmire continues, then the Khan would lose its advantages.
What is terrifying about the Khan attack was how fast he would take a certain place or position and from that position he would attack until the enemy is too overwhelmed and before they knew it, they are already surrounded.
If one look at paper, the Ultar and Nergui tribe should have no ability to come back.
But those two tribes does not only represent their tribe.
They represent the west
Every western tribe chief knows that if these three tribes falls, the encroachment of the central region hold by the Khan would invade the west.
If Ultar and Nergui tribe could bow down their heads , abandon their pride and ask help from these western tribes’ leaders around them, they could still preserve their legacy and rallies the western tribes to come aid them
Once they did ,the Khan would face a dilemma
There is so many things that could go wrong.
But what happens afterwards was so shocking that every chief that heard the news could not help but think that it is a lie when they first heard it.
The Chagai and the Brolgadhr tribe seems to reach some understanding.
The forces that was attacking the Ultar and Nergui tribe then went out from those regions a week later
And a week after that, the new chief of the Ultar tribe, the chief of Nergui and the chief of Chagai tribe acknowledges the Khan as the ruler of the Southern Great Steppe.
This ceremony was a fanfare that has never been seen before. Tens of thousands of horses roams the hills of the Chagai, every warrior from Ultar, Nergui, Chagai and Brolgadhr all was present.
In the process, Chagai, Ultar and Nergui tribe all recognize Aeryon as the rightful Khan who conquered the world by force and swore an oath to follows the Khan into battle and the Khan would fulfil the obligation of the superior.
