Chapter 278 - 274: It’s a Picnic, Not a Battlefield (Part 3)
He patiently waited for her to wake up naturally, after all, who made him torment her so much last night?
When Sophie Smith woke up, she found Asher Land squinting at her. Feeling a bit shy, she reached out and pinched his waist hard as a form of revenge for last night.
Sophie got dressed and, upon stepping out of the tent, found Robert Williams standing a few meters away, waiting respectfully.
Sophie glanced down at herself. Although her clothes were tidied up, there were still some ambiguous marks on her neck that she couldn’t conceal, which made her instinctively lower her head.
Asher Land came out of the tent two seconds after her, and seeing Robert, he approached him in an open and easy manner to exchange a few words.
Sophie sat in the car, remaining silent throughout the journey, while Robert and Asher continued their conversation.
Most of what they talked about were company matters, something Sophie wasn’t interested in, so she put on her earphones and leaned her head against the car window, listening to music.
After about two hours, Robert finally drove the car back to the Land Family residence.
As soon as they entered the hall, they saw Irene Morton sitting on the sofa, looking displeased.
"Sister Sophie, did you two have fun last night?" Her words were filled with jealousy.
"Of course, how could we not have fun?" replied Asher Land. Indeed, last night’s experience was truly remarkable, a memory to savor.
Sophie gave Asher a glare, signaling him to tone it down, lest the whole Land Family’s servants hear about their unspeakable escapades outdoors.
Sophie was about to head upstairs to enjoy a hot shower when Irene abruptly stopped her.
"Irene, is there something else?"
"Oh, it’s nothing major, just wanted to discuss something with you, Sister Sophie." Irene’s face bore an innocent smile, "In a week, it will be Brother Asher’s birthday. Uncle Land called me yesterday saying he plans to attend Brother Asher’s birthday party. I was thinking, could you perhaps avoid being around for a few days? I mean, could you move out of the Land Family mansion and stay elsewhere for a few days..."
"Irene, what are you saying!" Asher Land frowned with displeasure, hurriedly interrupting Irene.
Sophie gave Asher a surprised look, realizing that his birthday was in a week. She really was an unqualified mistress, not even knowing her patron’s birthday.
Her lips curled into a self-mocking smile, her bright eyes suddenly dimming.
"Sister Sophie, don’t misunderstand, I’m not trying to drive you out of the Land Family. It’s just that Uncle Land said that for Brother Asher’s birthday party this time, he doesn’t want it to be too grand, just a gathering for the family. Basically just the Morton Family and the Land Family..."
"Enough." Asher’s eyes flashed with a hint of impatience, as he picked Sophie up and headed straight for the bathroom, "Didn’t you say you wanted to shower? Why are you still standing here?"
"Put me down." She spoke calmly, her expression unperturbed.
"Your leg’s bothering you."
"..."
Asher carried her all the way to the bathroom before putting her down.
He personally drew the bath for her, checking the water temperature with his hand.
"All set. Need my help?" His voice was surprisingly gentle and attentive, though it was kindness she could not appreciate.
"No need, go attend to your work, doesn’t your company have things to handle?" Sophie said and then shooed him out, locking the bathroom door behind him.
Irene’s words echoed in her mind for some reason, stirring a strange feeling of frustration within her.
