The Vampire King's Possession

Chapter 793. Choosing A Crib

Mauve twisted her fingers as she sat in her favorite chair. Mill had placed a cushioned stool underneath her feet to help with her swollen ankles. There was also a stack of books from the library for her to read. Mauve knew it was a distraction. Mill didn’t want her worrying about Jael, and she appreciated it, but nothing could distract her from the fact that her mate was out fighting Palers.

Lady Marceline was also with her, enthusiastically discussing how the baby’s bedroom would be set up. Lady Marceline wanted to be in charge of arranging everything. She had also suggested making baby clothes and planned to oversee that herself. As always, Mauve had not been able to talk her out of it, insisting it was too early.

Besides, she didn’t mind. She was glad Lady Marceline was able to do this for her, and happily so. She wondered if this task would have been delegated to her mother if she were still alive. Mauve forced herself to focus on the conversation; she didn’t want to dwell on the past. Her present was better than anything she could have dreamed of.

Mauve really did her best to listen, but all she could think about was the fact that tonight was the first night Jael would be taking the humans to hunt Palers. He had decided to start with three of the fire mages. Mauve thought it was a pretty odd number, but the fewer they were, the better. Other things bothered her, things that were even harder not to think about.

If the expedition went well, there was a chance she might not see Jael for longer periods while they worked on getting rid of the Palers. Since humans were involved, transportation would be a lot slower; therefore, Jael had already arranged for a safe house to be raised near the Nolands.

Mauve didn’t want to think about it, even though she knew it was for the best. She was sure the vampires would be able to take care of themselves, but it was hard not to worry. However, she knew she couldn’t just sit still, but Jael wouldn’t let her do anything. If only Louis were here, she would have an excuse to go to the library and look at the spells.

Unfortunately, these two women never left her side, especially when they knew she was worried about Jael, and they would certainly not approve if they found out she wanted to practice spells.

Kieran had told her he would work on finding a cure for the white disease, but a part of her wondered if magic could speed up the process. If she could just learn some healing magic, she was certain she would be able to help.

Getting rid of the white disease was not the only reason for this. Humans were not like vampires, and with the war coming and just a few mages, they would need a way to speed up the humans’ healing.

As much as she wanted to bring up this idea, she knew she could not, as Jael would shut it down almost immediately. Even if he agreed with her, he would prefer someone else did it, and with her pregnancy, she had already lost points in trying to convince him.

"What are you thinking about so deeply?" Lady Marceline asked as she smoothed Mauve’s furrowed forehead.

Mauve forced a smile. "I am just worried about Jael."

"You have nothing to worry about," Lady Marceline said. "You should be more worried about the Palers your mate will run into."
