Nixie looked at Noah weirdly.
“What do you mean?” she asked, then clarified almost instantly, “What makes you believe I can talk with him?” Her head tilted, eyes questioning, yet there was a trace of something deeper—resentment, maybe?
Noah raised an eyebrow at this unexpected response. “Aren’t you the will of the only shadow realm in this universe?” he asked, voice casual but eyes watching, cutting. “Don’t you have some kind of privilege? Like a very close relationship with Shadow, for example?”
But Nixie just stared at him—like she was genuinely wondering if something was loose in his brain.
“You don’t?” Noah’s voice changed slightly, a bit of amusement curling around it. “Your life sucks, Nixie. Even with all your status, you can’t even enjoy some privileges?” He looked at her the way someone might look at a wealthy princess locked in a golden cage — rich in title but poor in substance.
That look offended her more than the words. She immediately got defensive, her pride scratched raw.
“Do you think it’s easy to make him talk to you? Then try it, you’ll see!” she snapped, bitter, sharp, her voice laced with frustration and something else, something that sounded a lot like humiliation.
Because the truth was…she had tried. So many damn times. But every time, she had received only silence, only cold indifference. Shadow had never acknowledged her, never even once, and she began to wonder, long ago, if she simply wasn’t worthy.
So when Noah came in, acting like it was easy—like it was possible—she couldn’t help but feel bitter, couldn’t help but feel angry at herself, at him, at everything.
But in her moment of wounded pride, she made a mistake. She challenged the wrong man.
