Chapter 73: Pity Or Mockery
Julia’s face drained of color, her rage mingling with panic.
"You don’t understand!" she hissed, leaning closer, her voice shaking. "This could ruin me. My career. My reputation. You were supposed to be on my side!"
The man met her desperate gaze with a cold, indifferent stare.
"On your side?" he repeated, his voice dripping with amusement. "Lady, I did the job you paid me for. Everything else? Well, that’s on you."
Julia’s heart raced as her mind spun, trying to process the reality of the situation.
She thought she had everything under control, but now, everything was falling apart—and this man, the very one she had hired, was at the center of it.
"Why?" she asked, her voice quieter now but no less venomous. "Why betray me like this?"
The man leaned forward slightly, his eyes dark and unreadable. "Because," he said, "in this business, people like you? You’re just a paycheck. Nothing more. If a better deal comes along..." He trailed off, shrugging again as if it were the simplest truth in the world.
Julia trembled with anger, but beneath that was fear—fear that she had lost control of everything.
Without another word, she grabbed her bag and stormed out of the club, her mind already racing for a way to salvage what was left of her life.
