Chapter 781
Chapter 781
Devin saw that Marcus and Nene’s parents were still a little confused. He had bombarded them with several pieces of information that were not relevant to their situation.
“I’m sorry for saying all of those things, sir, ma’am. Let’s go to the town to rest first,” Devin told Marcus’s parents.
Marcus’s father just nodded at him, and the man turned his attention back to his son. Devin heard them talking about what happened in the fields. While they were walking, the farmers were relieved that they were being guarded by two massive wolves, but Devin could see that everyone’s tensions were released when they entered the gates.
Truth be told, Devin thought that even with the town’s walls, the town was simply not safe anymore. There were just too many undead roaming around, and the only place that was somewhat protected was the capital city of Nermador.
He was told by the guards and Marcus that wizards did come in shifts from Nermador to protect the town, but the townspeople were complaining that the number of wizards was simply not enough.
Just like what happened tonight, the ten wizards that was on shift to guard the town were all busy fighting the undead in only some of the places nearby, and some, like the field where Marcus and Nene’s parents were working, were left defenseless. If Devin were one of the townsfolk and he did not have the means to fight like an adventurer, he would not risk himself by returning to the fields.
Devin thought that the town would not last longer than a month. Any day now, the town would be destroyed by the undead. He didn’t know why the townsfolk were still here. They should have gone to Nermador already and just let this town die. He knew that going into Nermador was the only place the townspeople could go because traveling the roads was simply suicide. He knew that for a fact because when they were on the road, the undead that they encountered were simply too powerful. If Anton were not with them, Devin and his parents would have perished already.
He remembered when the ghouls attacked, Devin thought that his parents had made a mistake accepting the job of guiding a supposedly Supreme Rank wizard to the town near Nermador. Anton simply looked too young to be a Supreme Rank wizard. Of course, he changed his mind when he saw how effortlessly Anton’s dire wolves killed the ghouls, as well as the vampires that led the monsters.
While he was walking beside the two wolves that were given to his parents by Anton, one of the wolves nudged him. He looked at the wolf with a questioning expression on his face, and the wolf simply tapped his hand with its nose. When he opened his hands, the wolf dropped a ring on it.
Devin was extremely surprised. The ring looked like the ring that Anton took from the vampire his dire wolves killed. Suddenly, he thought that the ring could be the same. A valuable space storage ring. He had heard stories about spatial items, and in one of them, the most valuable storage items were those that regular folks could use. According to the old adventurer who told the story to him, along with his friends, if one managed to acquire such a spatial item, one just needed to concentrate on it. Since they were walking slowly enough, Devin tried it.
He became extremely excited when he saw in his mind a space of about 3 cubic meters. The space was filled with coins, gems, clothes, and some books. At first, Devin thought of keeping the ring for himself, but he remembered that in some of the stories, powerful wizards would cast a spell on their items that would let them track them if they were lost. He hoped the ring was not such an item. Devin put the ring in a safe place and turned back his attention to making sure that they arrive safe to where they were going.
Soon, some of the farmers separated from the group and went home, while Devin, Marcus, and Marcus’s parents continued walking towards the warehouse that Devin’s parents had rented. When he noticed it, he told Marcus that his parents and Nene would not be there anymore and should be back at the inn they had rented, so they headed there instead.
When they got near the inn, they heard a shout coming from the inn’s third floor. Devin realized that it was Nene, and soon, Nene, followed by Devin’s parents, came out of the inn with Nene rushing to them.
After that, Marcus, Nene, and their parents decided to go home first to rest. When Devin offered to bring them home, Marcus’s father declined and told him that the town should be safe. When everyone looked askance at Marcus’s father, the man blushed. The town was simply not safe, especially at night, despite the lights that kept the streets bright. Devin’s parents commanded one of the wolves to bring them home and guard them until the next day, while the second wolf remained with the three adventurers. The fact that their way home would be guarded by one of the wolves made Marcus and Nene look visibly relieved.
After Marcus, Nene, and their parents left, Delfin, Eva, and Devin went to their suite.
“Father, mother, the wolves killed a vampire and secured a spatial ring from the monster, just like the one that Anton took from the vampire his dire wolves killed. I can enter the ring’s space, and it’s about three cubic meters inside. It’s filled with treasure!” Devin told his parents.
Instead of getting excited, Devin’s mother looked concerned instead.
“Will the vampires know that we have one of their rings?” Eva asked.
“I don’t know, but we should assume the worst. Tomorrow, we will leave this town first thing in the morning. The only thing that will keep us safe is to get far away from here. Regarding Nene and her family, we’ll bring them with us if they’re willing to come with us tomorrow, but if not, then there’s nothing we can do,” Delfin told his family.
“I’m sure that they would come with us. This town is on its last breath,” Devin said quietly.
The next day, no one was surprised when Devin and his parents saw Marcus, Nene, and their parents on the first floor of the inn, waiting for them with all the belongings they wanted to bring with them. Delfin nodded in approval when he saw that the things they brought were only enough to be carried inside small bags.
“Devin, we’ll be coming with you. I hoped that your offer was still valid.” It was Nene who actually asked.
Eva approached Nene and hugged her.
“Of course, child, it’s still valid. You and your family can come with us, and I’m thankful that you decided to come. This town…,” Eva shook her head.
“We’ve sold all of our belongings, enough for a couple of horses,” Marcus’s father said.
Without further ado, all of them left the inn to start their journey until they reached a place where they would not be afraid all the time. Devin saw that Marcus’s neighbors gathered to say goodbye to Marcus’s family. There were look of envy on their faces since Marcus’s family had a chance to escape from this dying place, and it looked like they would be able to survive the journey simply because they were guarded by two powerful dire wolves that were gifted to the adventurers by a powerful Supreme Wizard on a whim.
