The Systems Challenge

Chapter 447: Where to Next?

The following morning showed an incredible increase in the pace they were able to set. With the rolling slopes of the hills, they were able to spend less time maintaining their balance and more just moving forward. Plus, there seemed to be fewer rocks to create other hazards while walking.

Elmo, however, worried that something still might happen. That they might encounter a creature or something that would make this place much less desirable to deal with. Such as encountering a group of hill giants or something. Anything that would create more trouble for them for whatever reason.

He couldn't say that it would happen for certain, but he felt convinced that sooner or later they'd encounter something that would potentially be fatal.

Why he was only starting to think this way now was mostly because they were nearing the end of the competition and he wasn't convinced that such a peaceful end would occur for them. That there was going to be some conflict somewhere.

Yet, he didn't say anything about it to the others, even Jonas, simply because he didn't want to jinx anything, throw up a flag of some kind, or any other foreshadowing that would otherwise have not happened.

All he really wanted right then was to get this over with as quickly as possible. Even if it cost him the competition.

At the end of the day, Elmo felt like he was starting to sweat bullets, his clothing drenched in sweat. Yet, not only wasn't it very hot that day to have caused him to sweat so much, but now there wasn't anywhere to take a bath.

Even the streams that they'd always seemed to be able to normally find seemed to be absent that day.

"Looks like we'll be rationing water tomorrow," Patricia remarked after they learned that there wasn't one of miles. "I certainly don't want to run out of water anytime soon."

"And this is what we get for strictly heading only east," Km added, making her displeasure for the strict adherence to only heading east. Elmo was at least glad that he'd sided with her on the matter. He wasn't sure how good for his health it'd be right now if he hadn't.

"How were we supposed to know that this would happen?" Elwin asked, making it sound as if it was Kim's fault.
