A collective gasp spread through the room, followed by murmurs of disbelief.
The blow hit the Beaumont family hard. They stood frozen, their pride shattered, and their reputation now dangling on the edge of disgrace.
Denis, dazed, clutched onto the last strand of doubt. "Are you sure?" he asked with confusion. "I saw the reports. A doctor confirmed her pregnancy. How can that all be false?"
The middle-aged doctor looked him in the eye and said unwaveringly, "I’ve been practicing medicine for over thirty years. I know what I’m saying. I don’t know which doctor she brought in or what reports you saw, but she is not pregnant. Hence, there is no question of miscarriage."
"What about the blood?" Jeanne demanded, pointing at the vivid stain on the floor. "We all saw it. She collapsed and was bleeding. She was crying in pain."
The doctor frowned and stepped toward the stain. Kneeling, he dipped a finger into it and rubbed it thoughtfully between his fingers. His brow furrowed, and then he stood.
"This isn’t blood," he said with conviction. "It’s paint."
"Paint?" someone whispered.
Disbelief crashed over everyone like a tidal wave. Tania’s desperate bid to fake a miscarriage was exposed in the most humiliating way possible.
