Chapter 283: Nightmares.
Mei Mei could hardly bring herself to imagine how those poor teenagers had lived. From the story Jingzhe was telling her, it seemed like they targeted young geniuses from single parents homes without influence, orphans and those from poor backgrounds.
They took people whose absence would not cause too much chaos. But, it was hard for her to imagine Madam Feng staying quiet while Jingzhe was gone. The Mo’s would not have bothered to look for him but her, she would have moved heaven and earth to find him and bring him home.
"How did you escape?" she asked him.
"We created explosives and killed our way out." He answered after sighing. "We got on the ship that used to deliver prisoners. To our relief, the royal family seemed to have got wind of what was going on on the island. Royal agents were the ones that had come on the ship. They took us away and arrested the adults on the island that were still alive. As for the research subjects, I think they were all killed."
Mei Mei continued to pass her hands through his hair. "How long did you live on the island?"
"Two years." He nearly bit his tongue. "Two freaking terrible years. The royal family did not allow us to return to our families immediately. They put us in a rehabilitation center in another empire for a full year.
We were allowed to further our studies as we wished so most of us took online courses. Of course, being that we are geniuses we graduated within a year and for some within months.
We were not always locked behind high walls. They allowed us to leave and explore the outside world. Under supervision of course." He could not forget the eyes of secret royal agents following him around all the time.
"Which empire did they hide you in?" She asked.
"The British empire." He answered with flourish. "For me, I used those outside trips to meet with my business partners and my mother. During my time away, it turned out that she had used the business plans I left behind to continue building our own little small empire. She knew that she needed a lot of money to find me because the money could buy influence so she did not rest until I was found."
