The sun hung low in the sky, casting a warm golden light over the carnival grounds. Music drifted through the air, soft, playful tunes mixed with the sound of laughter, chatter, and the occasional ring of a bell from a nearby game booth.
They arrived together, walking through the wide entrance decorated with paper hearts and pastel streamers that fluttered in the breeze.
Brenda led the way, turning heads in a fiery red mini dress that hugged her curves like it was made for her. Her blonde hair spilled down to her shoulders, and her bold red lipstick matched the confident smile on her face.
She had spent extra time getting ready, picking her best dress, and curling her hair just right. And now, she walked a few steps ahead of the others, making sure Alanis had a clear view of her.
She smiled to herself, pretending not to notice if he looked her way, but she was watching.
Brian strolled beside her in a wild, multi-colored shirt that popped against his black trousers. He looked relaxed, his eyes already darting around, eager to explore everything at once.
Harlow followed behind, wearing her favorite faded jeans and an oversized white shirt that swayed gently in the breeze. Her red hair was tied into a ponytail, and she had only added a little lip gloss. She hadn’t dressed up, and she hadn’t planned to enjoy the day. She was only here because Brenda had somehow convinced her to come, and Harlow had dragged Alanis along without thinking too much.
Beside her, Alanis wore his usual black shirt and black trousers, unbothered by the sun casting a glow on his face. His dark clothes made him look out of place, like a shadow in a world of color. Still, he stayed close to Harlow, his gaze quiet but alert, as if he was trying to figure out why he agreed to come in the first place.
