Chapter 7: Suspicion (2)
Duan Yixin didn't know that Chi Xinru had already suspected her identity, so she ate pancakes and pickles vegetables with interest. It was her first time eating such fresh food.
In her world, crops can no longer be grown in the soil because chemicals pollute the air, water, and earth. All of that was the result of the war that lasted for more than three hundred years, which was still going on at the time of her death. Duan Yixin sighed inwardly, grateful that she was still alive and could still enjoy this meal.
Filled with gratitude in her heart, she raised her eyes to look at Madam Chi, who was watching her daughter eat with a smile. Thinking of the owner of this body, she became curious about the parents of the original owner. So far, Chi Xinru had only mentioned her maternal grandparents but not her parents, which made her curious.
After they finished their meal, Madam Chi put the empty plates back into the bamboo basket and left. Looking around the tidy courtyard, Chi Xinru said, "Xin Xin, we have cleaned the house, but I think your house really needs some repairs."
Duan Yixin looked at the dilapidated courtyard and said, "It's all right. It should be fine for a while. I have to make money first before I can repair the house."
Thinking of the empty houses and tattered furniture in their village, Chi Xinru sighed and said, "This is the second time those bandits have attacked our village. I hope the government can capture these bandits as soon as possible. Otherwise, we have no other choice but to leave our villages and become refugees."
After listening to her words, Duan Yixin looked at Chi Xinru and said, "Xinru, thank you for everything you have done for me. Without you, I wouldn't have been able to survive last night. If you need my help, just come to me anytime. As long as I can, I will help you."
Hearing what she said, Chi Xinru was really moved by her sincerity. But Duan Yixin's words also made her sure that the young woman sitting in front of her was not her friend but someone who looked exactly like her friend.
Her friends won't politely say thank you to her. She will most likely cry and complain about how sad she is or how scared she is. With her weak and gentle character, the Duan Yixin that she knew wouldn't be able to drink water calmly after experiencing the life-and-death situation last night.
Chi Xinru stared at Duan Yixin silently for a long time, then smiled sadly at her and said, "Don't mention it. We are friends, and I know you would do the same thing to me in that situation."
Before Duan Yixin could clearly see the sadness in her eyes, Chi Xinru stood up and said with a bright smile, "Xin Xin, I need to go back and help my mother clean up the house. I will visit you later."
Duan Yixin nodded and said, "All right. Be careful on your way home."
