Chapter 171: Tears the Heavens Never Heard
Envi and I were shocked when we saw the notification saying that Canis was one of the rewards we had earned. He was to become a familiar—a summoned creature that forms a contract with a human and grants them power proportional to their level.
An example of a familiar is the Phoenix currently owned by Freya. I’ve also heard that each of the hero families in Braveheart has their own familiars. For instance, Winterfall has a legendary stag, Flamemore has both a phoenix and the fire dragon Ignis, Stormheim commands a lightning tiger, Starlight has a kind of celestial horse, and the Braveheart Royal Family possesses a winged lion—the kingdom’s very symbol.
The strange thing is that my own family, the Blackmore hero family, not only lacks a Dark Magic user but also doesn’t have any familiar or legendary beast like the others. Because of this, we’re considered the weakest among the hero families.
However, Blackmore is often associated with Canis, because every 50 years, Canis rampages through the Blackmore region—and we’re the ones who face him. Other than the first Patriarch, Hiro von Blackmore, no one has ever been able to seal him. So, in every generation since, we’ve kept losing to Canis.
Many members of the Blackmore family have died fighting him in the past, until finally, Canis’s rage cooled, and he re-sealed himself in the realm of darkness. But that tradition has now ended—because I defeated Canis.
Due to this history between Blackmore and Canis, our family uses the emblem of the dark wolf—to symbolize our struggle against him.
But now, history has changed... Canis, that damned disaster-bringer, is going to become my familiar? The Blackmore family is going to receive as a familiar the very beast that slaughtered so many of our people? It was hard to accept.
That’s what was going through my mind as I listened to the God of Darkness offering Canis as my familiar.
Envi immediately shouted, "This is ridiculous! That damned wolf killed so many of the Blackmore family in the past! He even helped slaughter the gods of Cosmoria! I can’t accept this!"
He raised his katana again and pointed it at Canis.
"UWAAAA!" Canis ran away in a panic, hiding behind the God of Darkness.
