Chapter 30: Starters or Dinner ?
"Dinner's ready... Both of you, come." Elaine's voice rang from the kitchen, sweet but commanding.
"Coming," Leon replied, pushing himself off the matress. He stepped into the room, eyes flicking to Selene as she trailed behind him.
"What's for the dinner, mom ?" Selene asked, her voice soft, almost bored.
"Baked beans and bread," Elaine chimed with a smile.
A sudden gust of icy wind slithered through the room, making them all shiver.
"The sun's already down?" Selene glanced outside, frowning. The sky was a dim, creeping gray.
"Winter's coming," Elaine sighed, her voice losing its warmth. "We need to cut down to one meal a day. If we don't ration now, we won't make it through."
She tore a piece of bread, slathered it in beans, and leaned in close to Leon, holding it to his mouth.
"Here, Leo. Open up," she spoke in a sweet tone.
Leon's lips curled into a slow smile as he opened wide, taking the bite — and letting his tongue brush against her fingertips.
"Hey, now don't eat my fingers. I know you are hungry." Elaine spoke with a smile.
