Chapter 38: Hitting the Streets
After a night of torrential rain, the morning sky cleared, leaving the air a little fresher.
Shuhui Street woke from its dead silence like a man breaking free of a long restraint, growing even noisier than usual. A babble of voices filled the early morning, as if all the phantoms scattered by last night's rain had returned.
Last night, after Old Cai finished the surgery on Lorna's physical body, their three-person Legion connection concluded without a hitch.
This Legion connection went perfectly. Gu He hadn't actually done much of anything, yet his Host value surged to 95% of the second tier.
Lorna returned to her body. Once she confirmed her new Cyberware was working fine, she downed a glass of Fenggu, lit a cigarette, and walked right out into the rain.
"I owe you big time," she told Gu He right before she left. "If I survive, I'll pay you back. If I don't, go ask my sisters for it."
Gu He had urged her to listen to Miss Ayane and lay low for a while, but Lorna merely offered a terse thanks and left without looking back.
First thing in the morning, Kumiko Ayane came over from the Resplendent Color with Kasei Sakai. She smiled at Gu He.
"It's a beautiful day, Little He. You've been at the Fishpond for ten days now, and I heard from Little Zhuang that you haven't really looked around since you got to the city. Tell you what, I'll have Miss Sakai take you out for a stroll today."
