Ch. 150 - Cultural Festival Latter Half 10 - Aoi’s Evaluation
The cultural festival was nearing its end, and I was about to move to visit and observe the presentations at other venues.
However, a familiar group approached me. It was Middleton and Rhea, along with their spouses, Isaac, Diageo, and Grantz. Furthermore, Loretto was also a bit behind them. The important figures of the major powers, except for Ramsay, had all gathered and were heading straight towards me for some reason.
I had a feeling it was going to be a troublesome conversation, so I raised one hand and opened my mouth.
"I'm sorry. I was just about to go observe the presentations of other people..."
When I said that, Middleton laughed aloud.
"Aoi-dono or perhaps Marquis Ramsay are the only ones who would respond like that when seeing us."
"I just wanted to praise the students' presentations."
Isaac said that with a wry smile, following Middleton. If they were going to praise the students’ presentations, then I could converse a bit.
I stopped my feet and turned my whole body to face them.
When I looked back at them all with expectation, Rhea burst out laughing and waved a hand.
"Aoi-sensei becomes like a child at times like this, doesn't she? But, the students' presentations were truly wonderful. Is it the skill of the person teaching them after all?"
Rhea gave that impression while laughing.
"It's the result of the students' efforts. They are very honest and diligent children, so they may become better magicians than the teachers next year."
When I said that with my chest puffed out, Rhea laughed aloud again.
"You're boasting as if it's your own achievement. I think Aoi-sensei is a wonderful person, not only as a magician, but as a teacher as well. But, no matter how diligent the children are, they normally wouldn't be able to use such amazing magic. That's because of Aoi-sensei's power, making them learn unprecedented magic at an incredible speed."
"No, that's not..."
I tried to deny it by shaking my hands from side to side in front of my torso, but Middleton showed a dumbfounded face.
"Of course it is. No matter how you look at it, it's not a normal growth rate."
When Middleton said that, Isaac also nodded with a wry smile. It's not important, but seeing that expression made me think he looked just like Cote.
"You learn the basics of magic, and then learn elementary, intermediate, and advanced magic. This is considered the fastest and most efficient way to train to understand magic. And, what students can learn within their time at school is up to the advanced level. Special-grade and original magic are something that magic researchers and court magicians spend years to learn and develop."
"Well, it's the same with healing magic as well. Or rather, it's difficult to even learn advanced magic."
Diageo spoke words that were close to agreement with a complex expression. Perhaps it's an expression because he was aware that he's behind in fields other than healing magic. The other day, I talked a bit about the knack for learning magic in Maple Leaf, so I think we can expect the magic level of the academy to improve in the future.
While I was thinking about that, Grantz frowned and groaned.
"...Honestly, up until now, I didn't place too much importance on magical power… no, I guess I did somewhat, but I was lacking in understanding."
While scratching his head roughly, he spoke a word to the dwarven knight standing diagonally behind him. Then, the dwarven knight easily lifted a large shield that was about half his body. Grantz pointed at the shield and opened his mouth.
"This shield is the highest quality item that isn't even sold within the kingdom of Grandsands. It can block fire, water, earth, and wind, and if combined, it can create an improvised wall. You can quickly make a base on the battlefield, and during a retreat, you can reduce the damage from magic attacks."
After explaining that, Grantz lightly tapped the shield with his fist.
"...But, this shield can't block lightning. Lightning penetrates the shield. Until now, there was no lightning magic, and magic that controlled the weather was just something in legends. So, I didn't care much... Really, what a pain."
Grantz let out a deep sigh and gave me an aggressive smile.
"Now I have to make dwarven weapons that can defeat lightning magic."
I couldn't help but laugh along with Grantz, who started laughing like that. He had found out a new problem, and he was immediately exploring ways to solve it. I found that way of thinking very admirable.
Therefore, I think I'll try to teach him a little about lightning magic.
"Lightning travels through various things. Especially water is very conductive. This is because there are tiny impurities in water, and the lightning travels through these. However, if there are no impurities at all in the water, lightning won't pass through it. Similarly, there are a few substances that do not conduct lightning. If you use those, you will be able to block lightning magic as well."
When I said that, Grantz's eyes widened, and he stopped moving. It was the same with the other people around him. Only Rhea had a face as if she had seen something interesting, but most had a stunned look.
"...Is something wrong?"
Since they weren't saying anything, I asked them. Middleton, who was the first to regain his senses, cleared his throat and narrowed his eyes.
"Ahem… well, it's lightning magic that only a handful of people can use. I didn't think you would so easily teach its weakness. You're not unaware of how much value that information holds, are you?"
When Middleton asked me that, I couldn't help but smile.
"If it's just magic that releases lightning in one direction, it's not a problem if it's blocked."
When I said that, everyone's faces contorted simultaneously.
"...Is this the witch of the academy?"
Loretto, who had been silent until now, muttered that softly, and for some reason, everyone nodded in agreement.
