Ch. 139 - Cultural Festival 19 - Duel 3
After saying just that, Ramsay kicked off the ground again. This time, he must have put some thought into it. Instead of coming straight at me, he moved quickly to his right from my perspective. He must have been trying to disappear from my sight and make it impossible to predict his next move.
He was coming up with good answers in a short amount of time. There's no doubt he had plenty of combat experience. However, he was still too naive.
"...Body Enhancement, Reinforcement."
I activated the magic quickly, and enhanced my entire body. Then, I took two steps forward into the empty space ahead of me, and turned around.
Immediately after, a sharp sound of wind being cut passed, and a large fist passed by in front of my eyes.
"...How are you able to dodge without looking at me once? What kind of magic is that?"
Ramsay asked, looking at me with eyes as if he were seeing something unbelievable. I nodded lightly, and replied.
"If head-on doesn't work, then from the left or the right, or behind… This choice is also still too straightforward. And, your impatient personality makes you immediately go on the offensive if you think there's an opening. Regarding this, it was based on my prediction, but it was spot on, wasn't it?"
As I gave that advice, which also served as a provocation, Ramsay frowned for the first time with a frustrated expression. He lowered his waist, took a fighting stance, opened his eyes wide and drew his chin.
"Next time, I'm going all out. Defend yourself so you don't die."
"Well then, I should also start counterattacking. Please don't die."
I replied in response to Ramsay's words, though it wasn't a tit-for-tat exchange. After blinking his eyes, Ramsay laughed and kicked off the ground. Surely, this time he wouldn’t charge straight at me immediately. Thinking that, I focused the magic power and used the magic.
"...Stone Spear Barrage, Rock Spike."
The moment I spoke, thick, log-like giant stone spears jutted out, surrounding me. If he were close, it would be hard to evade, and if he were observing an opening, he would be forced to stop.
That's what I thought, but the stone spear was shattered right before my eyes, and I corrected my prediction.
"Don't think you can stop me with something like that!"
Ramsay yelled and charged towards me. The stone spears were being shattered like clumps of sand simply by him swinging his fists. That didn't seem like a simple enhancement of strength or speed. Nevertheless, by process of elimination, I could imagine what kind of magic it was.
"...Soft Wall, Tender Wall."
I quickly activated the next magic, confirming whether that prediction was correct.
The moment I said the magic name, a thin film-like wall covered my surroundings. Ramsay swung his fist toward the film. However, the thin film absorbed the impact like a thick rubber, and only changed shape without breaking.
Seeing Ramsay stop in shock, I activated the next magic.
"...Black Blade, Painted Sword."
The moment I used the magic, a black sword appeared from the ground. I used earth magic to collect the minerals from underground and created a sword specialized in durability.
With that sword in hand, I looked at Ramsay.
"Now then, I will counterattack."
After saying that, I held the sword in a middle stance. Sensing something, Ramsay jumped back and created a large distance.
Confirming that, I advanced with sliding steps. Mindful of his fast movements from earlier, I made sure not to move my hands too far from the centre of my body.
As I gradually closed the distance, Ramsay began to move back and forth to the right and left in an effort to obscure his sense of distance. However, in Kendo, where distance was valued above all else, such superficial tricks were meaningless.
Once in a middle stance, the sword tip was always pointed at the opponent’s face. Without breaking my body’s centre of gravity, I moved so that the target was in front of me as much as possible, using footwork only. This movement, this way of managing distance, was something that you inevitably acquire if you do kendo for many years.
Furthermore, if the opponent doesn't move, you can purposely let them take the initiative with a low stance or a sideways stance, or if they are trying to create distance, you can put pressure on them with a high stance.
Various psychological tactics were used before actually striking.
Perhaps Ramsay had no experience with such a fighting style, as he was unable to attack and could not move.
"You're already in my range now."
When I said that after closing the distance enough, Ramsay leaped out as if he had been shot. Perhaps he couldn't come up with a way to attack, or perhaps he relied on the technique he was most confident in. Ramsay came at me head-on with a punch at the very last moment.
However, the middle stance had the highest defence power. I used the back of my black sword to deflect the fist coming straight at me downwards. Perhaps expecting that, Ramsay reached out with his other hand, but I deflected it with the handguard of my sword, changing its trajectory.
I had blocked both fists. The moment I thought that, Ramsay’s right foot was thrust towards me. It was not a stance where you could normally launch a kick. It was an excellent core and balance ability. By forcibly pulling his upper body back, he was able to thrust his leg forward.
The fact that he could make such a move in a split second was worthy of praise.
"... Ha!"
Somehow, I received the kick with the flat of the sword. Receiving an impact as if I had been hit by a large magical beast, I was sent flying backwards.
While regaining my posture, I noticed that Ramsay had turned his sharp eyes towards me. He had a wild instinct not to miss an opportunity to attack.
However, the distance was too far. Before my feet touched the ground, I used my last magic spell.
"...Silver Shield, Aegis."
While Ramsay was rushing at me with tremendous force, a shining white shield appeared in front of my eyes. The moment he collided with the shield, Ramsay was violently blown away. Blown away with such force that he seemed to sink into the ground, Ramsay rolled like a ball two or three times on the ground.
The audience, who had been holding their breath at the two’s fight, voiced their surprise at the sight.
Ramsay, lying sprawled on the ground, did not move at all.
"...Do you need healing magic?"
I released my magic and asked that. Still lying on the ground, Ramsay opened his mouth.
"...It’s not necessary. I'm not seriously injured."
After muttering that, Ramsay stood up with a natural movement, just as he said. He lightly dusted himself off and faced me directly with his arms crossed.
"I lost. A complete defeat, clear and simple!"
When he declared that in a booming voice, the plaza was filled with loud cheers after a moment of silence. While receiving applause and cheers, Ramsay looked down at me.
"To think that I would be defeated head-on after going all out. Not only with powerful magic, but also with terrifying sword techniques! I want to fight you once without magic!"
After praising me unilaterally, Ramsay raised his face and began to laugh heartily.
Really, he was an interesting man.
When the presentation ended, and I was about to leave the plaza, I was stopped by Ayle and the others, who were all worked up.
"Aoi-sensei, you're amazing!"
"To think you would defeat Marquis Ramsay!"
While listening to their high-pitched cheers, I walked to leave the plaza.
"Thank you. Ah, please let me go outside for a bit. I'm keeping Dean-kun’s mother waiting."
As I said that and tried to leave the venue, I was stopped by a cheerful Middleton this time.
"That was a magnificent battle! I was deeply moved!"
"Is that so? Thank you."
"Yes! I'd like you to fight my country's royal knights next time, what do you think?"
"No, I'll pass on that."
As I brushed them off lightly, I somehow managed to shake off everyone's voices and left the plaza.
