Between Lovers and Shadows
The next day, I woke up. As soon as I opened my eyes, I saw Lingxi lying by my bedside, her head resting on her arm, still holding my hand, with a few strands of hair scattered messily across her cheeks.
My slight movement startled her awake. She suddenly lifted her head, her eyes still carrying a trace of lingering fear.
But the moment she saw I was awake, that fear was instantly replaced by overwhelming joy, her eyes brightening like falling stars.
"You’re awake! You’re finally awake!"
Her voice carried barely contained tears and endless happiness.
She threw herself at me, holding me tightly as if afraid I might disappear. Her body trembled slightly, as if still affected by the terror and worry of the previous night.
Lingxi’s eyes were red-rimmed, tears spinning in her eyes though she tried hard not to let them fall.
"Last night... last night I stayed here, afraid you would never wake up again... Now that you’re awake... it’s so good..."
Her words were somewhat scattered, but every word was filled with deep affection for me and the joy of having me back.
"Don’t be afraid... don’t be afraid... I’m fine now, aren’t I?"
