Chapter 1111: Dumbledore's Preparation - The Inquisitors Arrive!
"How did you do it?" Theodora Whitethorn, Headmistress of Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, asked. "Muggle technology has never worked around magic before?"
She wasn't the only one curious about the question.
The moment she asked it, the Headmasters, Headmistresses, Professors, Chancellors, and Principals of schools and academies all looked at the man seated on a standalone chair among them.
Each of these individuals carried a Pensieve-like object, showing them the situation of all candidates of the Intercontinental Tournament and how they were holding up against the unexpected, queer nature of the first stage.
None of them had known what the first stage would be.
In fact, even Hogwarts students and professors didn't know what Lord Black Phoenix had planned for the first stage.
Dumbledore had only hinted at the first stage's unusual nature to his top generals—Snape, Madam Villanelle, and the headmasters of various schools.
None other had dared to demand an explanation from him, either.
So, those who had remained in the dark, even about those little hints, couldn't help but lean forward in their chairs toward Lord Black Phoenix, waiting for his explanation.
"You are wrong about one thing, Ms. Whitethorn," Dumbledore said, continuing to look into his Pensieve-shaped crystal that showed Ron passing the Tournament using his Mecha Eye Spell. "Muggle technology has worked in the presence of magic before… Only recently. Last year… around the end of May."
Faces twisted suddenly, remembering that dark event—Theodora's even more so.
It was the day when MACUSA had fallen.
It was the day when Lord Yellow Warlock had attacked Ilvermorny and killed many students.
It was the day when the American wizarding community had ceased to exist, the entire continent coming under the dictatorship of the Dark Alliance.
"He used Muggle technology against the wizards who were inside MACUSA Headquarters that day," Lord Black Phoenix told them, drawing gasps all around. "Not only had he used Muggle technology, but he had also killed hundreds of wizards with it… taking all by surprise."
"That's…" Whitethorn hissed with a pale face. "… impossible."
"How do you know this, Lord Black Phoenix?" Mahoutokoro School of Magic's Headmistress, High Priestess Momo, asked. "We have all tried to learn what happened that day… all we managed to get was nothing but wild clues. What you are claiming is much wilder than that."
Dumbledore lifted his gaze off the monitoring object after seeing an Ilvermorny girl use wandless magic related to voodoo dolls to survive the three bullets, meeting the criteria to pass the first stage.
He smiled. "I have my ways," he said, giving no other explanation. Then, he looked toward Headmistress Whitethorn. "I don't know how Lord Yellow Warlock accomplished that feat. However, it meant it was possible to replicate it."
Dumbledore drew a sharp breath, his pupils dilating as he looked into the darkening future.
"Preparation is the key," he told them. "The Dark Alliance will not show reservation while using Muggle technology in the coming war, friends. And if you think that just because they are dark wizards, they would look down on it and won't use it, then you are living in a well-crafted, rotten illusion.
"This is not the medieval era. Magic is strong, but Muggles have advanced so much that they can lay waste to one region of the planet while seated on the opposite side of the world. We are not just fighting to survive, if I remember correctly, right? We are fighting to save the world from falling into darkness. What's the point of doing that if half the world ends up burning in mere seconds, killing millions, wizards and Muggles alike?"
All gazes fell, the image of death and destruction burning into their minds.
"No," Lord Black Phoenix said. "We must prepare for everything, even the use of Muggle technology. A few months ago, I gathered the scientists from the countries under the protection of the Order of Black Phoenix and asked them to recreate Muggle weapons that can work in the presence of magic as well. It was something related to… electronics, they told me."
Muggles… with weapons that can kill them… them… wizards and witches…
Technology that can shadow their magic…
Was Dumbledore preparing for the worst-case scenario or giving Muggles the arms to end the entire wizarding populace?!
Doubts couldn't help but storm their minds.
Dumbledore again smiled at that, reading their thoughts like a book.
"Let's focus on the war that is already on our doorstep," he said, making the likes of Whitethorn and Villanelle sigh heavily at that. "Also, these guns were the easiest weapons to restructure to work against magic, I am afraid. The more lethal ones that Muggles possess… they heavily depend upon these electronics. So, no need to…"
Dumbledore couldn't finish that sentence.
His mouth remained open, his dark eyes lifting slightly as they landed on the massive Death Star whose existence everyone had been ignoring so far, like last night's nightmare.
It wasn't just him.
Everyone—from the wizards and witches seated around him to the students afar, from one part of the world to another—reacted in the same way.
Because, after weeks of inactivity, after giving them an impossible-to-settle anxiety for days, the thing in the sky… moved.
Specks of light were dancing around it so much that they could see them even from here.
From the Muggles, they already knew that these specks of light came from other smaller ships. Now, these ships flickered into a swarm, gathering in one region, giving the Death Star a red spot.
Then, just as the anxiety within all hearts was about to explode, it happened.
They blinked.
In the next moment, they saw another massive ship, much bigger than the specks of light, but still smaller than the moon-like object in the background, appearing out of nowhere… like Apparition.
And this new ship was triangular.
After spending a month in Hyperspace, leisurely covering the Multiversal distance to the Harry Potter Bubble…
… the Inquisitors were finally here!
