Chapter 1453 - 1456: Is He Really My Father?_1
Ms. Zhang was teased and actually blushed, lowering her head in embarrassment.
"Just call me sister, no need for ’big sister’. With the added ’big’, it makes me feel like I’ve aged several years," Yang Chuxia said with a laugh. "I’ve brought some food over. Do you want to eat some?"
"This?" Ms. Zhang was indeed a bit hungry, but the wedding assistant had said she couldn’t eat anything.
"I brought plenty; it’s meant for us to eat together. If you don’t eat, the rest of us will, and later, don’t say we were tempting you," Yang Chuxia added, seeing her hesitate.
Seizing the opportunity, Yang Xiayun also said, "Come on, sister-in-law, let’s eat together. Our family doesn’t have those strict rules. Remember, when sister got married, it was right here in our house."
After hearing this, Ms. Zhang thought to herself that this sister was no ordinary girl, her status in the family must be almost like that of a son.
Persuaded by the Yang sisters, Ms. Zhang joined them in eating. After enjoying the hot meal, she felt much more comfortable.
After the meal, they chatted for a while before Yang Chuxia and her sisters left, taking the wedding assistant with them to eat.
Only Ms. Zhang’s personal maid and Ms. Zhang were left.
"What’s going on with the dowry?" asked Ms. Zhang. "I heard that the dowry was carried wrongly. If all the dowry boxes were covered with red paper, how could there be a mistake?"
"Miss, it might not be a mistake. The maidservant noticed the carriage and the boxes weren’t those prepared by our house. Perhaps the son-in-law added to your dowry," said the little maid.
Ms. Zhang felt something was amiss. If they really wanted to add to her dowry, they would have done so early on and would have brought it with the dowry procession. Why intercept halfway and claim the dowry was carried wrongly? The conversation among those people clearly indicated a real mistake, and it seemed Qingrui had no idea.
Something fishy was going on!
"Where is all the dowry?"
"In the outer room!"
Upon hearing this, Ms. Zhang hurried to the outer room. After inspecting her dowry, she indeed found two boxes in the corner that weren’t from her family.
She opened the boxes to see that the fabric and clothes inside were definitely not prepared by her family. These textiles were ordinary, the clothes were common, and the patterns were completely different from what she had initially seen.
Sensing something was wrong, she went through all the dowry boxes and found everything else to be normal, except for these two. She recalled her own items and realised a box of clothes and a box of shoes and socks were missing, and in their place were an extra box of fabric and a box of ready-made clothes.
"Miss, why are there two empty boxes here?" The maid dragged out two boxes that had been hidden under a pile of festive silk.
Opening them, they were indeed empty. Ms. Zhang rushed over to see the boxes, which were covered with red paper on the outside. How could it be a mistake? It was clearly intentional, but the insides were empty.
The little maid then asked, "Miss, why is there cornstarch?"
In that instant, Ms. Zhang seemed to understand something.
Clutching her fists tightly and glaring with rage, she exclaimed, "Truly my own father, to skimp on my dowry like this after I managed his business for so many years."
"Miss, are you saying?" The maid was stunned as she had thought the dowry was provided by the son-in-law.
"Hmph, Xiaohong, just wait and see. If he doesn’t replace the two boxes of my dowry on the day of returning to my parents’ house, I will make sure he loses face," Ms. Zhang was furious, thinking if she was to lose face at her in-laws’, then she shouldn’t be blamed for not giving face to her father. It’s not like the family couldn’t afford her dowry; he had resorted to such means to annoy someone.
