Chapter 545 - Settling Karma

In power fantasy Fables that Viers liked to read so much, many of those MCs were crafters. They could create stuff, from alchemy pills, formations, enchanted items, power armors, and so on. Their crafting prowess was as absurd as their battle power. They were often interlinked with each other.

Even Viers’ most idolized fantasy villain, Fang Yuan, was a superb Gu insect crafter.

ALL HAIL THE GREAT LOVE IMMORTAL VENERABLE!

Viers was not a crafter.

He knew there was a certain allure of making something incredible from scratch from his own hands. However, he lacked the motivation to truly go in depth of the crafting field. Not that he looked down on it like shortsighted mook villains, but crafting wasn't as exhilarating as battling and personally growing stronger to him.

That said, he was a Level 4 peak with the soul searched knowledge of thousands upon thousands. He could make things when he wanted or needed to.

And so, the old-school clock that housed the power of the Wheel of Fortune came to be.

While the impetus was the luck essence from the girl that Boram saved but ultimately killed herself, Viers combined other Luck Pathseeker essences and items to create the object.

The goal was to tap on the elusive power of luck.

As a Pathseeker and as a person, Viers didn't rely on luck to get to where he was now. Be that as it may, since the avenue was available for him, why shouldn't he take it?

Wasn't this literally ‘making your own luck’?

The main power of the clock, the Wheel of Fortune, was to absorb and bestow good luck.

Viers could break down luck-based items as a sacrifice to empower the Wheel permanently, focusing the effect for something more potent.

Luck items of high tier were very scarce. The stronger a Pathseeker got, the less effective the lesser ones were. Viers had a bunch, not a lot, but there was more than normal from his wanton plundering. The Wheel would turn those things into a luck that was useful even to the Level 4 peak him.

The Wheel could also absorb good luck from a person. Only, the person had to be willing. That sucked fortune then could be applied to another person. Which Viers planned on being himself.

While the Wheel of Fortune’s luck bestowal would only be temporary and not a permanent increase in luck, it was good enough for Viers.

But how effective would that luck be? Viers had no idea. He just thought it was better to have bigger luck than smaller.

More luck, more critical hit chances and all that, right? Well, quantifying luck would be a bitch. The buff is applied, but the way it works? Vague. That’s luck for you. But again, better to have luck on your side than not.

Out of all the Arcana holders in Viers’ court, only the Wheel of Fortune was not a person. An object. There wasn't any grand meaning in this, he just tried it. Surprisingly, it worked. The object merged with the arcana, creating a greater item as a result.

On the clock that was not a clock, there was a compass. Viers pulled the golden compass out of its socket smoothly.

The secondary ability, luck detector. The Golden Luck Compass doesn't point north but to something good. It can be a rare magical herb in a forest, a hidden treasure, an opportunity, away from danger, or whatever... At least, it is supposed to be. Don't know if it really comes out as intended. Hope it comes out okay.

The Wheel of Fortune itself would remain in the Biome, protected. The materials alone would make ordinary Level 5 salivate. The compass was the thing designed for carrying.

With this, one more open seat is filled in the Arcana.

Nine empty seats remain. I’ve got a few candidates, but they need to prove themselves first.

Viers had been showered with luck aura. His next itinerary was not in the Biome. Teleportation was working again after they got close enough to Prime Material.

After filling his stomach with a scrumptious meal, Viers made his way out, breathing the fresh air of the real world again.

... Actually, the outside world smells worse than Viridis. The lower ambient mana and all that. Haaah, nothing I can do about it. Time to go.

After leaving it for Latias Kingdom, Viers returned to the Free People Coalition.

If I remember correctly, I left after Valkut. That mess with Paina’s family with the Fae. Ciel and Rose and the Church... I wonder what the saintess is doing now. Hope she’s still kicking, cuz she still has a debt to me.

In the next few days, there were a lot of deaths.

Viers was closing the karma between him and a bunch of people in his list.

People who earned his grudge, or with potential of biting him in the ass one day

In a certain little town, there was a beast tide.

The cause of this disaster was of course Viers. It wasn't even hard. A soul hack on an alpha monster pack and a few angry growls were all it took.

There were a lot of casualties. However, all those deaths were actually an obfuscation for two targets. A certain sibling with the name Kate and Jarret.

Their misfortune was that they had a relationship with the first otherworlder that Viers killed, Sigma.

Kate was set up as the love interest of the MC. The kind village girl that got saved by the isekai-ed futuristic gunslinger MC while she was in danger picking herbs in the forest.

Viers was weak back then, so his method of eliminating Sigma was far from ideal. He killed Sigma in front of Kate.

Then Kate’s doting big brother, Jarret, the Level 2 town guard captain, went after Viers with fury, for the murder in daylight crime and traumatizing his sister.

Viers killed his friends in the pursuit and soul-cursed Jarret.

He thought Jarret would be dead but Freya arrived and saved him. Freya followed his trail and resulted in the hero and villain’s first encounter.

Whether her brother was alive or not, Kate was dangerous. She was an MC’s love interest. Perhaps she would become an adventurer and want revenge for Sigma, the guy who she met just a few days ago, and her brother.

Today, Viers returned to uproot the seeds of revenge.

He found out that Jarret was still alive. Kate had been doing jobs to support her brother’s medication bills. It was hard work but the young woman did so without complaint.

Viers felt like shit, but he killed them both.

Even though heaven and earth scorned him, Viers still did it. Because Kate was dangerous, because there was no telling how Freya, now wielding a Fate artifact, could use this karmic thread against him.

That was that, then there were the innocents caught up in the monster tide. 57 people, to be exact.

Viers personally sent them all into the afterlife with care. He cleaned their sins first. Kate and Jarret got extra care, not that Kate had many sins to begin with. She was just a good girl through and through. Her soul was beautiful to behold.

Again, Viers felt like shit. The hypocrisy after creating the monster tide that killed them and doing these to make him less bad for himself. He knew, and he did it anyway.

I’m sorry, Viers said while looking at the souls floating to the heavens. I don't deserve to say I’m sorry. I know. Hate me as you’re able. This sin, I shall bear it.

Kate and Jarret was but one case. There were several others. People with a high threat level according to his META Fable knowledge. People who got impacted from Viers’ past adventures that might eventually point their swords at him.

Not all of them like Kate, putting their past behind for a better tomorrow. Viers found some of them indeed were sharpening their fangs for a chance to one day bite his throat.

Viers cut those budding karmas in the bud, before it bloomed.

The likes of Fang Yuan could do all these without batting an eye. Viers’ dao heart wasn't as strong. He felt like shit.

He had done this before, in the aftermath of the Book World. The second time didn't make it more palpable.

Cleaning up those he had grudges with, was significantly easier.

One example was Homen. A guy from Marakkus city, the Sin City, the hive of scum and villainy where he met Boram for the first time. It was also the debacle with Izabella and the Demon King’s left eye.

Actually, Viers already forgot what Homen did to him. He remembered that he set Homen’s house on fire before he left Marakkus. At the time, Homen was a Level 4 while he wasn't so he couldn't kill him, just arson his house.

Viers killed him all the same. Not even directly, but he orchestrated his death.

In all his ventures, Viers didn't act directly. He used proxies, hired knives, bombs, poisons, and so on. Sometimes, innocents got caught in the incident. But he had to mask the death of the real targets, or the Church would directly know it was him.

Viers felt like shit.

Through the charity organization that the Hanged Man and Paina established, he would reach out to these people or their relatives.

At the end, all the earlier entries in the book of grudges were crossed. Viers had become so strong that the earlier area of the RPG that was his life, was no longer a challenge.

He didn't resolve all grudges in his list.

On top of the shit list was Georgi, Grandmaster of the Dumuzin cult. He fucked Viers real bad in Valkut arc closing.

Next, there was Rostov the Blanket, of the Harkelan Ten Tundras.

Most of the people that captured him during Grandia castle were dead, either by his shotgun or the Level 6 demon’s breaking out of his seal. But the real perp, Rostov, was still at large. The limbs that Dragon-Viers ripped off were not enough

Third on the list was Freya.

Viers couldn't kill them now but in the future... Tonight, he had done enough.

After that, Viers wanted to wander a little bit. To walk, sorting out his feelings. In some woods, he strolled without being attacked by monsters because he was much stronger and the monsters knew it.

The sun was rising, the air was crisp and fresh. He hoped to take some disgusting sensation that stuck in his chest for a bit. He knew it wouldn't but he hoped a bit.

He walked aimlessly and found a little stream with a little waterfall.

Without thinking, he washed his hand on the natural falling water.

“The blood on your hands won't go off.”

Viers didn't turn around at the sudden vice on his back.

“I know that. What do you want?”

“I want to look at the face of the one who spilled so much blood around these parts.”

Viers turned and faced the man. A man in his fifties. A Level 5.

“A fake face. Can't you even live with your own?”

“I’m surprised you can find me. I took every precaution,” Viers said.

“It wasn't easy, but I have a knack of smelling the blood out of killers. That is why I’m here.”

“Hmm... That badge, you’re a Peacekeeper? You’re here to arrest me, officer?”

Peacekeepers were high-tier cops of the Free People Coalition.

As for how the man found him with his Mystic Star Shroud from Aletro canceling divination, Viers wasn't too surprised. There were too many powers in the world to take into account, and it was impossible to counter them all. The man got an ability to find him, that was fact.

“The name’s Garvey. If you can still feel remorse, then peacefully come with me. There’s hope for you yet,” he offered. “That pain you’re feeling is your heart telling you that your path is wrong.”

“...Yeah, nah, officer. My path is as it should be. Real proper bloody and evil and epic.”

“Then you leave me no choice. Prepare-”

Garvey’s head exploded.

The body hit the ground after two seconds after the head got blasted to pieces.

Viers looked toward the way the arrow came from, and saluted Yunis. The dark elf was a tiny speck even with his Euryale Sight active.

“Are you alright, My Liege?” Jordan the Fallen Knight landed near him after a flight.

“I’m fine,” Viers answered.

While Viers was doing his business, the other six Level 5s of the Seven Warlords of Carnage were guarding him.

It was like walking to a 7-Eleven at night with six rocket launchers instead of a pepper spray for muggers. Totally overkill. Totally necessary.

Viers made a wise choice.
