Chapter 439 - 284: So That’s How It Is
"Wanping..." Chai Xuanyi murmured.
He opened his eyes, heard his own voice, and yet his vision was full of confusion. He felt as if he remembered many things, yet his mind was empty, devoid of any clear images.
"My lord?" A voice rang out beside his ear. Chai Xuanyi turned his head and saw a strange face.
Yuanyi saw the confusion on his face and sighed, "My lord, I am Yuanyi, the maid who serves you daily."
Chai Xuanyi nodded blankly, and listened as Yuanyi added, "You had a fever all of last night and were calling out names in your delirium. I thought you had remembered something."
Dumbly listening, Chai Xuanyi took a moment to respond, his voice hoarse as he asked, "Who am I?"
"You are a gentleman of the Chai Family, ranked fourteenth among your kin..." Yuanyi’s voice faltered. Normally, she would go on to tell him when he had married the Princess of Wenxi County, when he had established his own residence... But now, his wife lay in the memorial hall. What if he asked, as usual, where his wife was and demanded to see her? What should she do then?
"My Lord, your fever has just subsided; perhaps it’s best not to dwell on matters too much." Yuanyi dipped a cloth in water, wiped Chai Xuanyi’s face, and continued, "Would you like to rest a while longer, or would you like to get up now?"
Chai Xuanyi hesitated for a long while before responding, "Let’s get up."
Yuanyi called the maids in, attending to Chai Xuanyi as they helped him groom and change his clothes. Chai Xuanyi let them work, yet his gaze was continuously fixated on a white silk flower worn by one of the maids. After staring for a long time, a sudden constriction in his throat prompted him to abruptly pluck the flower off.
The maid assisting him with his garments screamed in fright and threw him a disbelieving glance; she quickly lowered her eyes and bowed, saying, "I deserve death for this."
