Chapter 147 - 94: Bloodstained Clothes
Ran Yan and her servants gathered inside the house for an entire afternoon, only stopping when the little nun came to deliver their dinner.
After finishing the evening meal, Ran Yan sent them all to bed early as she lay on the couch, struggling to fall asleep for a long time. Ge Lan was an intelligent woman, unlike Mrs. Xing who was swayed by emotions, nor was she as careless as Wan Lu. It was foreseeable that sooner or later, she would realize that the soul residing in this body was no longer the same.
Ran Yan didn’t want to harbor mutual suspicion with such a loyal person, so she planned to tell Ge Lan the truth. If Ge Lan could accept it, she would continue to stay; if not, Ran Yan would arrange a proper solution for her. The worst-case scenario would be the secret being revealed. Such gambles were not common for Ran Yan, but in the journey of life, there are always one or two occasions where there is no choice but to bet.
However, today didn’t seem like the right moment. Wearing only a simple white undergarment, Ran Yan carried a lantern to the porch and looked at the side room, which was already dark, before sitting down on the floor of the porch.
It was already autumn, and the rainy weather meant there were fewer mosquitoes than usual. Ran Yan stared quietly at the curtain of rain connecting heaven and earth, a hint of melancholy surfacing in her heart. Her past life seemed like smoke and clouds, like a dream. Every time she woke from that dream, she felt particularly lonely in this unfamiliar world.
Ran Yan, illuminated by the faint light of the lantern, stared intently at her delicate, boneless hands. The hands from before had dissected a total of a thousand corpses, certainly not the delicate fingers she had now.
After an unknown amount of time, soft footsteps sounded on the porch. Ran Yan looked up to see Ge Lan carrying a satin dress and walking towards her.
Ge Lan sat down beside her, spread out the satin dress for Ran Yan to put on, and looked at her quizzically, as if to ask, "Wife, why haven’t you slept yet?"
"Can’t sleep, and you can’t either?" Ran Yan asked.
Ge Lan smiled and nodded.
"Let’s talk then," Ran Yan said.
