Once the thrill of courting death subsided, the consequences of such recklessness always followed.
Lilith remained perfectly still, frozen in the exact pose she’d been in when the cake hit her. She didn’t move a muscle. It was as if she had transformed into a statue.
Yet the calmer she appeared, the more unsettling it felt to everyone else. It was like the calm before a storm.
Unable to bear the silence and tension any longer, Fenice elbowed the person beside her and whispered, “Hey, why don’t you go test the waters?”
“Why don’t you do it instead?”
The burly man beside her shot her a look that said she was out of her mind.
“Oh, come on. You looked so dashing after winning the bet and demanding everyone call you Daddy earlier. Go be a hero and sacrifice yourself.”
“You looked pretty dashing yourself just now. Why don’t you sacrifice yourself?”
“Could you really stand to watch a beauty like me put herself in danger?” Fenice asked, striking a delicate pose.
“Of course I could,” the burly man said. “In fact, I’d be happy to help.”
Before Fenice could react, he gave her a firm shove.
