"I always hoped Mommy would meet someone who really loves her,"
Stephanie said softly. "Back in Carcosa, she went through intense training every day. She’d come home with bruises and cuts. Even a gentle touch from Kane or me made her flinch in pain. I thought maybe she’d be happier if someone who loved her could take care of her."
Tears filled her eyes as she spilled the events.
Daniel turned to look at her.
Right then, Stephanie pressed the shutter button.
For the first time, she managed to capture the sadness and pain in his expression.
"When Mommy sees this, she’s going to feel sorry for you," Stephanie said, sending the photo to Chantelle with a satisfied smile.
Daniel didn’t bother checking the photo. He gently patted Stephanie’s head as his heart ached for everything she and her brother had endured.
"Hey, don’t mess up my hair! We’re not done with the shoot yet," Stephanie complained.
The sadness from earlier had vanished. She cheerfully directed Daniel into more poses.
Most of the pictures ended up being her selfies, with Daniel striking different poses behind her.
