{Chapter: 229 Blind}
Pepper stood silently, watching William and Jane interact from a short distance. A sense of frustration and bitterness gnawed at her heart. Why was that scumbag being so kind and attentive to Jane? He used to act just like that with her — warm, considerate, dependable — He was just like that to her, and he had no humanity at all.
She kept telling herself over and over again: Whatever that scumbag does now has nothing to do with me. And yet, no matter how many times she repeated that in her mind, the bitterness remained, stuck like a thorn she couldn't remove.
"Jane, you can't do this," Eric shouted, stepping forward anxiously. "It's far too dangerous!"
Jane's eyes flared with stubborn determination. "Those instruments, that data — it's my entire life's work. I poured years into it. I can't just walk away and pretend it doesn't matter. I have to get them back. Can't you understand that?"
Eric hesitated, looking torn. "But..."
Before he could finish, William stepped in smoothly, his voice calm but firm. "Don't worry. I promise I'll make sure she's safe. If anything goes wrong, you can hold me responsible."
Eric looked at William for a long moment, then finally gave a slow nod. "Tom, you sound like a responsible man... I believe in you."
But inside, Eric was still doubtful. Responsible? Where did this kid even come from?
