These two aspects have been constantly struggling against each other in the past, present, and future. After the descent of Maitreya Buddha, light shall ultimately triumph over darkness. This is the so-called "three periods" of Green Sun, Red Sun, and Baiyang.

The Green Sun of the three periods corresponds to the initial period of Dipamkara Buddha, when light and dark first appeared.

The Red Sun corresponds to the middle period of Shakyamuni Buddha, when darkness gained the upper hand and light was suppressed.
