Chapter 63: In the Midst of Dessert
"Thanks for sending me home, Ronan," Amelia said with a sigh as they stood in the elevator. The climb to the penthouse seemed awfully slow, and Amelia wished it could only be slower.
"They should be done with dinner by now," Ronan said, checking his wristwatch. "Emmeline Hawthorne has a rather strict schedule set by her mother. She goes to sleep before ten every night. She wouldn’t stay out too late."
"Oh, I am not worried about dinner," Amelia said. She then muttered bitterly under her breath, mildly in disgust. "I am worried we might walk into them having dessert."
Ronan, who had caught her little mumble, merely pursed his lips tightly together. He chose not to comment on the topic, allowing Amelia to vent all she wanted. He wasn’t in any place to say anything, and while he understood that Amelia and Matteo’s relationship was contractual, she still had her pride.
"Are you still planning to stay with him after this?" Ronan asked. "I know he offered you to move in, but with everything going on with Emmeline..."
"Oh, of course not!" Amelia said, shaking her head. "I will look for apartments starting tomorrow morning. My dad should be discharged soon, and I doubt Miss Hawthorne would be too pleased about her fiancé’s ex-fling lingering around."
"If you need a temporary place to stay, just let me know," Ronan said. "I’ve got an apartment downtown. It’s right next to a clinic too, which would be convenient if you need to bring your dad for further check-ups."
Amelia’s heart felt warm and fuzzy with Ronan’s words. She pivoted her body slightly so that she faced him just a little more directly and smiled.
"Thank you, Ronan," she sincerely said. At that moment, the elevator let out a soft ding before the doors opened.
