"I know, I know, but that kind of excuse can't hold out for everything." Kizashi said slightly impatiently, "Most people would try and reach out, create new bonds to replace those they had lost, at least after a while. Sasuke? He rejects bonds with others, from everything Sakura has told me, plus what little I've seen of the boy myself, because he fears that those bonds will be used against him or taken from him like his brother did to his parents. He has little to nothing to hold him here."
Mebuki didn't question her husband's conclusion. He was a retired lifetime Genin, who had charmed his way into her heart with his quick and ready humour and devotion to her. When Sakura had been born, he had retired from active duty.
He had been missed because of his skill at reading people. While not as sharp as a fully trained member of ANBU T&I, he could make a snap-judgement about someone, which usually turned out to be right for one reason or another.
"Sakura thinks that she can break through to him." Mebuki said quietly.
"She can't." Kizashi shook his head, "The boy has to make the first step himself, otherwise he will never truly recover."
