Chapter 148: Bend over
Abby lay in bed, surrounded by darkness that seemed to press in on her from all sides. She turned onto her side, then onto her back, then onto her other side, but no position felt comfortable. Her mind raced with thoughts and worries making it impossible to relax.
She sighed heavily, staring up at the ceiling. The soft glow of the moon peeked through the curtains, casting eerie shadows across the room. The silence of the night only served to amplify the cacophony of her thoughts.
Just as she felt herself drifting into a fitful doze, a voice broke through the silence.
"Abby, are you okay?"
Remo’s voice was gentle, concern evident in every syllable. Abby turned her head to see him sitting up beside her, his eyes filled with worry.
"I’m sorry, did I wake you?" she whispered, feeling guilty for disturbing his sleep.
Remo shook his head, reaching out to brush a strand of hair away from her face. "No, I couldn’t sleep either. But you seem particularly restless. Is something on your mind?"
Abby hesitated, unsure of how to explain the jumble of emotions swirling inside her. She bit her lip, debating whether to confide in him or brush off his concern.
Finally, she sighed and let the words spill out. "I just can’t seem to quiet my mind tonight. There’s so much going on, and I feel like I’m drowning in it all."
The shift of the bed startled Abby, but when Remo’s arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her close to him, a sense of calm washed over her. She melted into his embrace, feeling the warmth of his body against hers as she nestled against the curve of his chest.
As he buried his nose against her neck, releasing a contented sigh, Abby couldn’t help but smile softly. His presence was a balm to her soul, easing the turmoil that had been churning inside her.
