The afternoon sun streamed through the windows, casting a warm glow across the room where Alex and Lily were cuddled up on the couch. Lily nestled into Alex’s chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat against her cheek. Outside, the world seemed to slow down, cocooning them in a peaceful embrace.
"Have you heard from Abby? Did they find her?" Alex’s voice broke the tranquil silence, his words laced with concern.
Lily tensed slightly at the mention of her cousin, Abby.
Despite her own fears and worries, Lily couldn’t shake the pang of jealousy that surged within her at Alex’s inquiry about Abby.
"No, I haven’t heard anything yet," Lily replied, her voice steady despite the turmoil swirling within her.
"Why are you suddenly so interested in Abby?" Lily’s question hung in the air, tinged with a hint of accusation.
Alex sighed, his fingers tracing absentminded patterns on Lily’s back. "I’m not suddenly interested in her, Lily. I’m just... curious. She’s your cousin, and she’s missing. I can’t help but wonder if there’s anything I can do to help."
Lily softened at Alex’s explanation, feeling a wave of guilt wash over her for her earlier resentment. She knew he only meant well, that his concern for Abby was genuine. Yet, the green-eyed monster within her couldn’t help but rear its head at the thought of Alex focusing his attention elsewhere.
