Chapter 78: Scared
Abby watched as Remo disappeared into the kitchen, his silhouette fading into the shadows. A part of her wanted to protest, to tell him that she didn’t deserve his kindness, that she didn’t deserve anyone’s kindness.
But another part of her, a small, fragile part, whispered that maybe, just maybe, she wasn’t alone in this after all. Maybe there was someone who cared, someone who was willing to stand by her side, even in the darkest of times.
As she waited for Remo to return, Abby allowed herself to hope, if only for a moment, that maybe, just maybe, there was a sliver of light at the end of the tunnel, a glimmer of hope amidst the suffocating darkness. And for now, that was enough.
Remo returned with a concoction in hand, a mixture of ingredients that promised relief from the throbbing in Abby’s head. He handed her the glass, his eyes still holding that unspoken concern.
"Here you go. It’s a magic cure for hangovers," Remo said with a half-smile, trying to lighten the heavy atmosphere in the room.
Abby took the glass, offering him a grateful but weary smile. She took a cautious sip, the blend of flavors hitting her palate with a surprising burst of refreshment. Remo had a knack for this, she thought, a small warmth spreading through her as she realized how he was going out of his way to comfort her.
"Thank you," she managed to say, her voice carrying genuine gratitude.
Remo sat down beside her, giving her some space as she nursed the hangover drink. The room fell into a comfortable silence, a temporary reprieve from the storm of emotions raging inside Abby.
As the minutes passed, Remo broke the quietude, his voice soft yet persistent. "You don’t have to pretend, Abby. I can see something’s bothering you. If you ever want to talk about it, I’m here."
