Chapter 329: Liars
Emily was a grown woman who made grown woman decisions every day. She made her own money, she took care of herself. And Derek too was a grown man capable of standing on his own two feet, and handling the challenges that the world threw at him, like all other adults did.
But at the same time, when it came to experiences in the world. The two of them, especially when compared to their mothers, were impossibly young. It was not a fact that Emily liked to acknowledge, but just because she did not like acknowledging it, that did not make it any less true.
In fact, it made it even more so when Cassandra Haven had finally set the record straight. Admitting that Emily’s father had not died of cancer, and that Derek’s father had not died of an accidental overdose. That the two of them had instead been involved in an accident that was highly suspicious.
Emily had felt rage beginning to build within her. Slowly replacing the shock that had come with the revelation. She had been ready to start arguing. To vent her frustration and disappointment at having been lied to for years.
Sure she and Derek had lied too. Keeping their sleep struggles secret for years. But that was completely different. At least that was what Emily had thought. And then the reason behind the lies their mothers had told had been revealed, and all of the rage had left Emily like a balloon losing air.
It seemed that they were incredibly similar to their mothers in that respect, and Emily could not be mad about that. From the way Derek seemed to lose steam as well, neither could he.
It seemed that everyone at the table had lied to protect a loved one.
Looking over at the two women before her, Emily no longer just saw them as their mothers. She saw the grieving widows who’d had to make difficult decisions and had made them without hesitation in order to protect their children.
If something were to happen to Derek. Emily would want to find out every small detail that she could in search of the truth. So for their moms to push aside that instinct.Opting instead to care for their children, it must have taken a great deal of strength. A strength that Emily was certain she did not possess and never wanted to.
