Emily did not like the fact that thanks to her sleeping problem. She lied to her mother on a regular basis. But over the years, she liked to think that she had gotten very good at telling those lies. But it seemed that even with Emily’s skills as a liar improving, year by year.

Her mother had still picked out that something was wrong.

She might have not been able to put her finger on it exactly. But the older Molson woman had known that something was off.

Emily would most likely have never known that her mom suspected anything, if the older woman had not come out with it. But not only had she come out with it, she had done so when Emily least expected.

It was Tuesday night, and the two of them were on the couch. There was some documentary about seagulls, playing on the TV, but Emily was not paying any attention to it.

Instead, she was laying on the couch, her legs hanging off the armrest. Her head pillowed on her mother’s lap, and her mom was braiding her hair. It was not anything intricate. Just a simple plait that would be easy to undo in the morning when Emily got ready for work.

But in that moment, she was not thinking about undoing anything. Instead, she was just enjoying the moment. Her eyes closed as she let the rhythmic movements of her mother’s fingers over her scalp lull her into a state of calmness.

At some point, the documentary ended, and was replaced by another television program. But Emily was still not paying enough attention to really see what it was about. But when she did start paying attention was when her mother’s hands suddenly slowed down. And instead of the comfortable silence that had been going on between them continuing.

Her mother had decided to speak up.
