Chapter 136: Right Words
When Derek had left the penthouse headed to the diner, his decision had been clear. He was going to go straight into Bee’s diner, find Emily, apologize to her again and explain everything that had been going on to show her that when he had asked to sleep with her. He’d had nothing but pure intentions.
That had been it.
His entire plan stripped down to just the bare necessities. Nothing fancy added on top. He had wanted to just go in, say what he needed to say, and then just hope for the best possible outcome.
But during the drive to Bee’s, his mind had started thinking of all the different things that could go wrong. And at the end of it, he had decided that despite his plan to speak from the heart, that would have been something very unwise to do.
Afterall, Derek was a firm believer that in any situation. People who were most likely to succeed often did one simple thing. They had their hearts and their minds consult before they made big decisions.
It would not do him any good to disregard logical things in the process of speaking to Emily. Talking only from the heart was a lot more likely to add to his problems instead of reducing them. And so, instead of just parking his car, opening the door, getting out, and heading straight for the diner, a block away. Derek decided to wait a bit. To get his emotions under control. So that he did not have to worry about accidentally putting his foot in his mouth again.
At first, his plan had been to just sit there for a few minutes, get his story straight and then head over to Emily and tell her everything, explaining to her that he meant to sleep with her but not ’sleep with her’. But that simple plan had quickly been scrapped. He had to go in there with a more detailed game plan instead of just having a general idea of how he wanted things to go.
Which was why, several hours after arriving at the diner. Derek was yet to set foot inside the building. He was still outside in his car, rehearsing multiple speeches and trying to come up with one that would not have him A. Slapped again, B. Thrown out of the diner, C. Have Emily pour some liquid, preferably cold, not hot, over him, or D. Have all three of the above happen to him at once. But it was ridiculously hard to do. Leaning back against his seat, Derek cleared his throat and tried again.
"Emily, let’s sleep together. Just sleep. Not like in a sexual way. You know what I mean? ...no, no, no, no..." He cut that one off. It sounded as though they were buddies or something. He had to say something that showed the fact that he respected her, without being too formal. But what?
"Emily, let us sleep together. But just so you know, I don’t see you as a woman..."
