Chapter 112: Happy Day
It was a Friday, to most that did not mean anything Fridays came, and went afterall, that was just the way of the world. But for Emily that Friday was special, she could just feel it deep in her bones.
She had such a good feeling about that Friday, that even when she was awakened by a nightmare that had her struggling to breathe for a few seconds after rising, she was still able to conjure a big smile when she got out of bed. Being that she now slept during the day while her mom was at work, Emily did not try to be quiet as she moved around. She hummed loudly, as she made her bed, and then she gathered her things and finally got into the shower. Once there, with the warm water raining down on her, she could not stop herself from belting out a few popular tunes.
Her good mood followed her out of the shower. She danced her way through the apartment, wrapped and nothing but her towel. At some point she even grabbed a banana from the counter and sang into it. But doing that reminded her of what she had been doing when Derek had come in, and Emily had put the fruit down and headed back to her room. Upon returning to her bedroom she did not put on a simple pair of pants like she usually did when she was going to just laze around the house. Instead she picked out a bright yellow dress from her wardrobe, and when she put it on, she’s spun and spun enjoying the way it felt when it moved around her legs.
There was no precise explanation for her good mood. But even a she told herself the lie, she did not believe it. She knew that she was lying to herself. And she did not even try to fight herself after acknowledging that fact . The reason for her good mood was clear as day. Even if it had not been so clear, it would not have taken anyone too long to find it.
She had seen her former boss after going cold turkey on having any interactions with him, since the day that she had left Haven group headquarters. Seeing him should not have had any effect. In fact, instead of joy, she should have felt rage. But it was as though she had tapped into the fountain of youth.
Embracing her renewed energy, Emily used it to clean the house. She dusted, she vacuumed, and while doing that, she also took the time to wipe down the kitchen counter, the cupboards as well as the furniture in the living room. Any piece of available surface that she could get her hands on, she cleaned.
With that done, she even managed to do the bathroom. Only once that was done did Emily begin to feel a bit tired. She settled down on the couch to rest a bit.
When she finally did get up, it was just to make herself something to eat in the kitchen. The something ended up being some tea. A cup of tea in her hands this one especially made by her, and tasting just right, Emily made her way back to the couch. As she sipped her tea, a show that she was not really watching playing on the TV. Emily found herself hoping that the tea she had served Derek at the diner was also as good as the one that she was having.
Deciding not to let herself spiral into thinking of nothing but him, Emily finished off her tea. The cup empty, she went to the kitchen sink, washed it and put it aside. Then she returned to the couch where she settled down for a few hours and watched some more TV. After spending a few hours crying over imaginary characters, Emily decided to do something that she had promised her mom she would do a few days back... she went out shopping. She bought groceries that would last them the entire week, and also a few snacks for them to enjoy.
Her shopping done, she went back home and resumed her series marathon. She watched until it was almost time for her mom to come back. That was usually around the time that Emily started getting ready for work. She showered once again, removing all of the sweat and the dust that had come from her activities earlier in the day. In the shower, Emily found herself singing again , and she carried on, cycling through random tunes until she was out of the shower. Standing in front of the mirror, still in a towel, Emily did her hair. Instead of just pulling it into her usual ponytail without over thinking things, Emily decided to do something different. She brushed it all the way from root to tip and then she took the strands in her hands and parted them so that they were easier to braid. Once the braid was done, Emily held the end with a band so that it would not come unravelled and went to get ready.
As for her uniform there was nothing much she could do for the awful colour. So she did the next best thing, she ironed it within an inch of its life. Not stopping until it was crispy, and looked like it had just come off the rack. She even put a bit of makeup on. Lip gloss did not really count as makeup for most people, but for Emily her cherry flavoured one certainly did. Looking in the mirror, she gave her reflection a wink.
