Chapter 417: The Royal Banquet (II)
The great doors opened again.
The doorman's voice carried cleanly across the ballroom.
"Lady Maelis D'Aurélion, of the D'Aurélion Family."
Maelis entered in a dark green gown, her black hair arranged neatly over one shoulder. She scanned the hall the moment she stepped inside.
When her eyes found Gray, her expression brightened at once.
She started toward him, then noticed Seraph's hand on his arm and slowed, the smile tightening just enough to be visible.
A few breaths later, the doorman spoke again.
"His Highness, Prince Leon."
Leon walked in with the easy posture of someone used to being watched.
His gaze passed over the crowd, paused briefly on Gray, and moved on without a greeting. Adrian followed not far behind him, announced in a lower tone, his expression already cold.
Then came another name.
"Headmistress Gloria of Gloria Academy."
Gloria entered in pale gold, her face as unreadable as ever.
She did not look for Gray. She looked first toward the dais, then toward the cluster of high nobles near the center of the hall.
The doors opened once more.
"Headmistress Aurora of Clementine's Sword & Magic Academy."
Aurora stepped through as if the hall had been waiting for her. Her gown was a deep, wine-red that stood out immediately against the silver and gold around her.
She took in the room with one glance, found Gray in the corner, and walked straight toward him without greeting anyone else.
Seraph stiffened slightly as Aurora approached.
Aurora stopped beside Gray, close enough that her shoulder almost touched his. Her eyes moved from him to Seraph, then back again.
"So this is how you decided to arrive," she said softly.
"The First Princess on your arm, in front of the entire court. You're not even pretending to be subtle."
Seraph's cheeks colored.
Aurora leaned in just a little, her voice low enough that only the three of them could hear.
"Don't look so tense, Princess. I already know. He told me what the two of you are planning tonight." She glanced at Gray.
"And I support it. Watching that old man choke on his own announcement would be worth the trip by itself."
Then her smile sharpened.
"What I don't understand is why you didn't ask for my help. You usually do, when you want something messy done properly."
Gray took another sip of wine and looked at her over the rim of the glass.
"Because I don't need it."
Aurora's eyes narrowed; she was more curious than offended.
"We'll see."
The doors opened again before the conversation could go further.
"Duke Halvane and the Lady of House Halvane."
An older couple entered first, followed by two younger heirs in formal black. They bowed toward the empty dais out of habit, then drifted toward the center of the hall.
"Marquis Veylan."
A thin man with sharp features crossed the threshold next, already speaking to the attendant at his side.
His gaze swept the room once and stopped briefly on Gray, lingering just long enough to show recognition before he looked away.
"Her Grace, Evelyn, Duchess of the North."
Evelyn entered in deep blue, her presence immediately heavier than most of the nobles around her.
She did not look like a guest trying to impress the court.
She looked like someone who had walked into a room she already understood. Her eyes found Gray almost instantly.
For a moment her expression sharpened with interest, then she noticed Seraph and Aurora standing with him and only offered a small nod from across the hall.
More names followed right after,
"Dame Irene of the Western Court."
"Viscount Rhett and escort."
The ballroom grew louder with each arrival.
The musicians changed into a fuller piece, as if the hall itself understood that the important guests had not yet appeared.
Then the doorman struck the floor once with his staff.
The sound cut through the noise.
Every nearby conversation thinned. Nobles turned toward the entrance. Even Aurora straightened a little, though her smile did not fade.
The great doors opened all the way.
"His Majesty, the Emperor of the Central Continent."
The Emperor stepped through first.
He wore white and gold, the imperial mantle falling from his shoulders in heavy folds. His presence filled the front of the hall before he had taken three steps.
The crown on his head caught the chandelier light and threw it back across the polished floor. Behind him, royal guards moved in perfect formation, stopping just inside the doors.
The doorman's voice rose again.
"And His Highness, Prince Aerion of the Elven Kingdom."
The Elven Prince entered at the Emperor's side.
He was tall, silver-haired, and dressed in pale green and white that made him look almost carved from moonlight.
A thin circlet rested on his brow. His ears were clearly visible, and the mana around him was strangely powerful, containing a deep amount of wind intent beneath it.
He walked with the calm of someone who expected the room to part for him.
The two rulers advanced together down the center of the hall.
Nobles bowed in waves as they passed.
The musicians changed the piece again, louder now, more formal. At the far end, attendants moved at once to prepare the dais.
Seraph's fingers tightened on Gray's arm upon seeing them.
The Emperor and Prince Aerion reached the dais.
Attendants moved at once.
Two high-backed chairs had already been prepared, one slightly larger, carved with the imperial crest, the other a shade lower and trimmed in pale green for the Elven Prince.
The Emperor sat first.
Aerion followed a breath later, arranging his cloak with a small, practiced motion. Only then did the royal guards take their places along the steps.
The doorman struck the floor again.
"The court will pay its respects."
The hall moved at once.
Nobles formed a loose line without being told how. House banners, family names, and old ranks decided the order more clearly than any spoken instruction.
Those of highest standing moved first. The rest waited their turn with glasses still in hand and smiles already prepared.
Duke Halvane approached the dais with his wife. He bowed from the waist, and she owered herself in a full curtsy.
"Your Majesty. Your Highness. House Halvane is honored to stand in your presence tonight."
The Emperor gave a short nod. Prince Aerion answered with a polite, unreadable smile.
Marquis Veylan came next, followed by Gloria, then several other heads of house.
Each greeting was almost the same.
Others mentioned trade, borders, or "continued loyalty to the Crown." The Emperor accepted all of it with the same calm expression.
When Evelyn's turn came, the air around the dais changed slightly.
She walked to the steps, inclined her head, and spoke in a clear voice.
"Your Majesty. Prince Aerion. The North sends its regards."
The Emperor's eyes lingered on her a moment longer than they had on the others.
"Duchess Evelyn. It has been some time."
"It has," she replied.
"The North remains stable."
That was all she gave him before she stepped aside.
Maelis went forward with the composure expected of a D'Aurélion daughter. She curtsied cleanly.
"Your Majesty. Your Highness."
The Emperor studied her for a second.
"Your family has had an eventful year."
Maelis's smile did not slip.
"We endure, Your Majesty."
She withdrew before the comment could become a conversation.
Then the line reached the corner where Gray still stood.
An attendant appeared at Seraph's side and bowed.
"Your Highness. His Majesty requests the First Princess's greeting."
Seraph's fingers left Gray's sleeve for the first time since they had entered. She drew in a quiet breath, then walked toward the dais.
The silver of her gown caught the chandelier light with every step. Conversations nearby thinned as people turned to watch.
She stopped at the proper distance and curtsied.
"Father. Your Majesty. Prince Aerion."
The Emperor's gaze softened slighly.
"Seraph. You look as a princess of this house should."
Prince Aerion rose just enough to incline his head.
"Princess Seraph. It is a pleasure to see you again."
Seraph answered him with a polite smile that did not reach her eyes.
"Your Highness."
The Emperor's attention shifted past her, toward the man who had entered with her.
"And you brought a companion."
Seraph did not look back.
"Yes, Father."
Gray stepped forward on his own.
He did not bow as deeply as the lesser nobles had. Instead... he only slightly lowered his head, not caring at all about showing respect.
The black-and-silver suit, the mark on his forehead, and the calm in his face made the gesture look mocking rather than humble.
"Your Majesty. Prince Aerion."
The Emperor regarded him in silence first.
"Gray Vireux D'Aurélion. I did not expect to see you standing beside my daughter tonight."
"I received an invitation," Gray said.
"So I simply used it."
A few nobles nearby stiffened at the tone. Aurora, still watching from the side, hid a smile behind her glass.
Prince Aerion's eyes moved over Gray more carefully than the Emperor's had. There was no hostility in them yet, only assessment.
"So you are the one who accompanied the Princess."
"I am."
The Emperor tapped a finger once against the arm of his chair.
"We will speak later."
It was not a request.
Gray inclined his head and stepped back.
Seraph returned to his side a moment after, maintaining a calm expression with her hands folded in front of her.
Only Gray was close enough to notice that her fingers were still tense.
The formal greetings continued for a while longer.
The Emperor accepted each one without hurry. When the last of the high-ranking guests had finished, the doorman struck the floor a third time.
"His Majesty will address the court."
The Emperor rose.
The hall fell quiet at once.
"Tonight marks more than a banquet," he said.
His voice carried easily through the room, trained by years of speaking to people who had no choice but to listen.
"The Inter-Academy Exchange has concluded. The young generation has shown its strength. The realm remains stable. Our friendship with the Elven Kingdom stands firm."
He turned slightly toward Prince Aerion.
"It is in that spirit that this court gathers."
A polite murmur of agreement moved through the nobles.
The Emperor lifted a glass that an attendant had already placed in his hand.
"To continuity. To alliance. To the future of this continent."
Glasses rose across the hall.
"To His Majesty," the court answered.
Gray lifted his wine as well.
He drank only enough to complete the gesture.
