The middle schools in the small town didn’t have evening self-study for the first and second years, so students could leave after school.
When school was let out, Mrs. Xia drove to pick up Xia Ningxing and also took her brother along, looking after them with warmth and concern along the way. She asked Ningxing if she could adapt to the new school and if she had been bullied by any classmates, among other things.
If it had been any other child, they might have already been annoyed with their parent, but Xia Ningxing was not. She answered patiently one by one.

When she thought of the feud between their parents, she couldn’t help but worry that the girl might take her grudge out on her precious Bao’er: "Bao’er, has she bullied you at all? If it’s really unbearable, we can talk to the principal about changing classes."
The principal valued her Bao’er so much that changing classes would likely just be a matter of making a request, which would be very easy.
