“Really?” Why did his mother seem upset? It looked like her eyes were red – had she been crying?
“Yes!” Nan Fei answered resolutely.
Lu Jin noticed her determination. He feared that if he disagreed with her decision to return, she might encounter danger. In the end, he had no choice but to drive Nan Fei home.

After dinner, Huo Beijiang took Xi Liqun and others for a round on the training ground. He wanted to send them away but Xi Liqun stubbornly stayed, showing no intention of leaving.
“Bei Jiang!” Xi Liqun pointed to the men training. “I feel as though some people are missing?”
Huo Beijiang pretended not to understand. “How so?”
“The numbers don’t add up,” Xi Liqun muttered internally, feigning nonchalance. “These training grounds don’t match with the number of people you’ve transferred from the various squads, do they?”
Did the young man think he couldn’t count?
“Time for bed!” Huo Beijiang checked the time, “It’s nearly ten o’clock, who wouldn’t be sleeping by now?”
He then turned to Xi Liqun and complained, “Commander, are you causing trouble for us because your wife is not at home?”
Xi Liqun, infuriated, blew his mustache and glared at him. The brat had most of his men training up in the mountains and now he was blaming him?
“What would a bachelor like you know?”
Huo Beijiang adjusted his army collar, exposing his neck to Xi Liqun.
“You…” Xi Liqun was at a loss for words. “Beware! If there is a scandal about your lifestyle, you’ll regret it!”
“Alright, it’s getting late. I still have a report to write when I get back! Let’s go!” A political commissar hurriedly urged. “We won’t see anything in this darkness anyway. We can return tomorrow.”

“Take care, commander!” Huo Beijiang saluted, calling out cheerfully.
Hearing this, Xi Liqun walked even faster.
Huo Beijiang sighed with relief as he finally sent everyone away, thinking about the little wife waiting for him at home. He wished he could be home at once. He gave a few orders to some squad leaders and hastily made his way to the residential quarters.
Halfway there, he realized he was drenched in sweat. He took a detour to the public bathhouse to freshen up. After taking a shower and changing into clean clothes, he went home to find the door open but no lights on inside.
Huo Beijiang stared at the dark room, his heart beating quicker at the thought of his little wife waiting inside.
