Chapter 1769 - 1768: Crisis Lurks Everywhere
"Colonel, are you mocking me?" Qin Jian frowned helplessly. "At the time, I never expected her to reach the point she’s at today. I just thought this little girl was really pretty, with a personality that was soft yet spirited—not rustic, not delicate, never insecure, and never flashy. Her character fit perfectly with mine. I fell for her the moment I saw her!"
"That’s why I say you have sharp taste! Not only is she beautiful, but she has a beautiful soul too! Think about how I, along with your sister-in-law, used to fret about finding you a partner. Now it turns out we were worrying for nothing! Who could possibly compare to An Hao?" Zhang Jianguo laughed.
"Exactly! That’s the kind of talk I enjoy hearing! I’m very pleased with her!" Mentioning An Hao brought a wide smile to Qin Jian’s face.
"I’d say her greatest accomplishment was transforming you! You know how you used to be—a block of ice, with a cold, frozen expression year-round, and not even a trace of a smile. But after meeting An Hao, it’s like you became a completely different person. That ice block melted into water!" Zhang Jianguo couldn’t help but tease Qin Jian. "Seeing you now, it finally feels like you’re an actual, living man!"
Qin Jian rolled his eyes at Zhang Jianguo’s metaphor, adjusted his military cap briefly, and placed it on his head. "Colonel, if there’s nothing else, I’ll head back to the regiment! There’s still a lot of work to do."
"Alright, alright! I know you don’t like hearing this stuff. Fine, go ahead!" Zhang Jianguo waved his hand at Qin Jian, signaling he could leave.
After leaving the command post, Qin Jian didn’t return directly to the regiment. He made a stop at the municipal public security bureau to inquire about the man captured at the exercise site.
The police interrogated him multiple times, but the man stubbornly refused to speak.
Finally, the officers extracted a complete fingerprint from the camera retrieved at the exercise site, which matched the man’s fingerprint perfectly.
Faced with irrefutable evidence, the man had no way to deny it and eventually had to confess.
He admitted that he had been recruited by foreign agents, specialized in stealing military secrets, and then passed these secrets to intermediaries who transmitted them abroad, in exchange for large sums of money.
They didn’t know exactly who their employers were—it could be the United States, Japan, or possibly Taiwan.
These people had no beliefs or convictions, only an obsessive hunger for money, an insatiable desire for luxurious lifestyles, and a yearning for indulgent, debauched living.
For these desires and aspirations, they were willing to sacrifice the country’s interests and betray their homeland at all costs.
Upon leaving the municipal public security bureau, Qin Jian felt an overwhelming heaviness in his heart. Beyond this man, there were likely other individuals still lurking nearby, engaged in stealing military secrets.
In that instant, a face surfaced in Qin Jian’s mind—Hou Zicheng.
This man always seemed overly eager to ingratiate himself with military personnel.
A businessman involved in commerce—why would he be so keenly interested in military secrets?
Qin Jian held suspicions!
From this moment forward, Qin Jian knew he must exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant against this man at all times.
.........................
The night deepened, enveloping everything in silence.
A small sedan cruised through the sparsely populated streets, crossed two intersections, then three blocks, until it finally stopped in front of a secluded, standalone villa.
A man stepped out of the car, bundled up tightly despite it not being winter, as though afraid someone might catch sight of his face.
