Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 1664: Strange Combination

"How much are you selling these chickens for?" Zhang Yun didn’t notice the stall owner; she was just lowering her head, picking out chickens all along the way.

These chickens were not only big but also looked very lively.

She was planning both to make soup and have some meat; it would be best to choose a young rooster.

"Ah... Ah..." The owner gestured the figure eight towards her, then pointed to the ground at the roosters "Eight...yuan per jin?" Zhang Yun didn’t understand.

"No. Eight yuan each!" said the girl squatting on the ground.

"How odd, everyone else sells by weight, why do you sell by the piece?" Zhang Yun said, puzzled.

"Mom! Actually, if you look at the size of these chickens, they’re more or less the same. There shouldn’t be much difference in weight. I guess, he doesn’t speak very clearly, so he weighed each chicken and sells them by piece!" An Hao explained on the side.

"Alright. Then just randomly pick one for me." Since the sizes were all about the same, a few taels more or less wouldn’t make a difference, so it didn’t matter which was chosen.

"This one then. It looks more spirited." The girl stood up, grabbed a chicken from the cage, looked up at An Hao and asked, "Do you want me to prepare the chicken for you?"

"Yes." An Hao agreed.

The chicken had to be prepared after taking it home anyway.

Rather than getting chicken blood and feathers everywhere, it was better to let someone else clean it up.

"There will be an extra charge of fifty cents."

"Okay." An Hao agreed.

The girl skillfully grabbed the chicken by the wings, cut the chicken’s throat to bleed it, then scalded the chicken feathers with boiling water, her movements swift and efficient.

The mute nodded and smiled along.

He appeared quite approving.

"Is this your father?" Zhang Yun asked.

"No." The girl shook her head, "He’s my boss."

Zhang Yun nodded; she saw that this young lady, seventeen or eighteen years old, had fair and clean skin and was very charming, making her immediately likable.

But, this girl seemed somewhat silent.

Lacking the vivacity and energy of a girl her age.

"What about your father?" Zhang Yun asked again.

The girl stayed silent for a long time.

Seeing her expression, An Hao suspected the girl’s father might have passed away?

So, she gently patted her mother-in-law’s shoulder and whispered, "Maybe her father is gone, Mom? Let’s not bring up sad matters."

No sooner had An Hao finished speaking than the girl said: "He’s dead!"

"I’m so sorry!" Zhang Yun quickly apologized to the young lady.

"It’s okay. You didn’t mean it."

After a few minutes of waiting, the girl finished preparing the chicken, wrapped it in a sheet of straw paper, and handed it to Zhang Yun.

An Hao bowed her head, took out ten yuan from her wallet, and passed it to the girl.

"There’s one yuan and fifty cents in change." The girl turned and spoke to the mute man.

"It’s fine! Just keep it!" An Hao said.

A flash of surprise crossed the girl’s eyes.

The mute man became quite excited, bringing his hands together in front of his chest and continuously bowing to An Hao and Zhang Yun.

"You don’t have to thank us. You’re not making money easily either; it’s hard work!" After saying this, An Hao got ready to leave with Zhang Yun.

All of a sudden, a few people sprang out from nowhere and surrounded the stall that was selling live chickens.

Looking at these burly individuals, their demeanor was quite intimidating.

The surrounding citizens all scattered to the side to avoid them, and An Hao tried to pull Zhang Yun aside as well, but the young girl grabbed her wrist.

An Hao was startled and looked towards the girl.
