Chapter 22: Offer 3
Sophia emerged from her room a little while later. She was prepared for the celebration. She was dressed simply but elegantly. She had a stunning appearance.
She looked at Adam’s door as she locked the door to her flat. It was quiet and closed. With a little groan, she turned to leave.
Adam returned to the apartment complex late that evening. Shopping bags filled his arms. He has made numerous purchases. He had purchased pricey items that he genuinely desired for the first time in his life.
He had purchased new shoes, new clothes, and a cozy chair for his room. Most significantly, he had purchased the most recent PlayStation model. He had wanted to have it since he was a young child. He had never thought he would be able to buy it, even though he had often seen it in store windows.
He went upstairs with his fresh finds. He could hardly wait to configure his new gaming system. He saw something as he made his way to his room along the hallway. In Sophia’s apartment, a light was on.
The door stood open a little. From within, he could hear voices. He walked more slowly. He wanted to know. He should just head to his room, he knew. However, he was powerless to stop himself. He walked stealthily to her door. He peered through the narrow opening.
He noticed Sophia seated on her sofa. She was not by herself. She was accompanied by Robin. They were seated beside one another. They were laughing and conversing. They appeared at ease. They appeared close. Adam felt a bolt of anguish in his chest. It hurt physically. He lost all of his previous resolve to remain buddies.
This was far worse than the jealousy he had experienced previously. This was a more intense and agonizing sensation. He thought he was a fool. Their little acquaintance had brought him much joy. She obviously had someone else, though.
Silently, he moved away from the door. He wished they would not see him. A deep sense of defeat overcame him. He unlocked the door to his own room. He entered and shut it after himself.
He no longer felt the thrill of his new goods. The new PlayStation seemed weighty and useless in his hands. He let the shopping bags fall to the ground. He gazed at the wall while seated on his bed.
