Chapter 37: Unveiling Truths
Kaelen found Elias in the vast, elegant central hall of the Nexus Spire. He stood by a shimmering interface, deep in contemplation, his cosmic eyes fixed on intricate projections of what looked like stellar nurseries. She hesitated for a moment, suddenly self-conscious. Her new clothes felt wonderfully soft against her skin, but they also made her feel exposed, seen in a way she never had been before.
When she finally approached, he turned, and his cosmic eyes widened almost imperceptibly. He paused, his gaze sweeping over her, taking in her newly refined appearance. His perfectly sculpted features, usually an unreadable mask of serene detachment, betrayed a flicker of genuine shock, a subtle parting of his impossibly perfect lips.
"Are you... Kaelen?" Elias asked, his voice softer than she’d ever heard it, a quiet surprise in its depths. The question was not one of doubt, but of mild astonishment, as if a familiar landscape had suddenly rearranged itself into something even more beautiful.
Kaelen felt a blush creep up her neck, despite her resolve to remain composed. "Yes, Elias," she said, a little self-consciously, twisting her fingers together. "I... I used some of the facilities. They’re... quite remarkable."
Elias cleared his throat, a faint blush mirroring hers on his own cheeks. He wasn’t used to such an effect on others, or such an unexpected reaction within himself. His internal systems registered a peculiar warmth, a flutter that defied his usual, perfect equilibrium. "Right. Of course. You look... well, refreshed. And... efficient." He quickly regained his composure, shifting slightly, his logical mind reasserting control over the fleeting, confusing emotion. "As I said, introductions are in order, Kaelen." He gestured to a comfortable seating area that materialized from the floor.
Once they were seated, Elias looked at her directly, his gaze intense but not invasive. "My name is Elias Vance.I am... not from this planet. My home is a very different place, far beyond the stars you see at night. A place where understanding the fundamental laws of the universe is paramount. That’s all you need to know for now about my origin." He kept it brief, concise, knowing that too much information about his previous existence would only overwhelm her and detract from the immediate purpose. He observed her carefully for her reaction.
Kaelen’s eyes widened at his admission, but her mutated divine sense, now subtly enhanced by the purified environment and the AI’s gentle treatments, detected no deception, only a quiet, undeniable truth. It explained so much of what she had witnessed—the impossible power, the alien technology, the profound knowledge—and yet, it left so much more unspoken. The sheer scale of what he hinted at dwarfed anything she could have ever conceived.
"My name is Kaelen," she began, her voice gaining confidence as she spoke. "My family are simple plains folk, far from any major sect. They believed I had a weak spiritual root, destined for nothing but a quiet, ordinary life." She described her humble upbringing, the dismissive attitude of the local cultivators, and her fierce, quiet determination to survive despite her perceived shortcomings. She spoke of her desperate tinkerings, her relentless pursuit of understanding how Qi worked, not just how it was used.
She hesitated then, contemplating a deeper, more personal secret. Her gut, and more importantly, her mutated eyes, told her she could trust him implicitly. Her unique sight had never deceived her about a person’s true nature, and Elias Vance, despite his god-like power, radiated an unwavering, fundamental truthfulness. "But... there’s something else," she confessed, her voice lowering. "Since birth, I’ve seen things differently. Not like normal divine sense, which just perceives Qi. I see the flows, the patterns, the inner workings of Qi down to its most minute vibrations. It’s like seeing the lines of force, the invisible circuits, the very information that makes up reality. It’s why I could make the gun, why cultivation never felt like magic to me, just... mechanics, really complicated plumbing." She looked at him, a flicker of vulnerability and hope in her eyes, wondering if he would truly understand.
