Mrs. Li suggested Liu Ya go for two reasons: firstly, in her eyes, Liu Ya was Shi Fengju’s "maid and concubine," and secondly, she was a dowry servant of the main wife; perhaps the young master would think of the main wife when he saw her and return to Ningyuan. However, Liu Ya, seeing her master being "bullied" to that extent, was fuming with anger and didn’t want to bring Shi Fengju any food.
But she dared not disobey her godmother’s orders, reluctantly accepting the food box with discontent. Yet, she called a young servant girl to carry it. Not long after leaving Ningyuan, she stopped and instructed the girl, "I have some urgent matters to attend to, you go deliver the meals to the young master alone! Hand them to Chang Huan, and remember, leave right after you deliver the items without any idle chatter. Understood?"
The young servant girl dared not disobey and perceived delivering the meals alone to the young master as an honorable task, cheerfully agreeing and rushing to complete it.
Indeed, following Liu Ya’s instructions, the young servant girl gave the food box to Chang Huan, only saying it was food for the young master and then left.
When Shi Fengju returned to the study, his expression was frighteningly somber, and one of his cheeks bore a faint red mark that resembled a slap. Chang Huan dared not provoke him at this moment and pulled the young servant girl aside, saying, "Sister, since you’ve brought food for the young master, you should deliver it yourself!"
Ordinarily, the young servant girl would’ve been eager for the chance to present herself in front of the young master and gain favor, but since Sister Liu Ya had already instructed her to leave it with Chang Huan, she dared not disobey. "I still have tasks to do, better you give it to the young master!" The young servant girl said quickly, turning around to run off.
Left without a choice, Chang Huan, worried that the food would get cold, sighed and reluctantly knocked on the door to enter.
"Young master, the main wife sent someone with meals for you! Do you want me to serve them now?" Chang Huan quickly blurted out before Shi Fengju could command her to leave.
Shi Fengju actually halted the word "leave" that was at the tip of his tongue and indifferently asked, "The main wife sent it? Where is the person who delivered the food?"
