Chapter 38: The Estranged Sibling (+16)
[Why are you going to New York? Is it for superhero business?]
"Yeah... something like that. I need to register with the SMD first, then I need to go to New York for something else."
Mira sighed tiredly. The entire concept of being a superhuman was completely lost on her, so she still couldn't really understand how much her son had changed. The only thing she knew was that Jason was going to be fighting a lot more now that he could go into Gates, and she was worried for him.
[Just don't push yourself too hard, okay, Jason? I don't want you getting hurt. I know I can't stop you from doing what you want, you're your own man now. But at least think about me before putting yourself in harm's way, okay?]
Jason smiled. He knew that his mother was a worrywart, so he decided that he wasn't going to tell her the more dangerous things that he was getting into. As far as he was concerned, his mother deserved to just live a stress-free life after everything she had been through.
"Yeah, I'll be careful. You don't need to worry about me. Try to get some rest, we'll talk when I come over."
Jason was about to end the call, but his mother suddenly spoke up again.
[Oh yes, Jason. There's something else I wanted to talk to you about. Uhm... it's about Janet.]
Jason's face immediately twisted into a frown at the mention of that name, and he waited patiently for his mother to continue talking. Janet Marc was the firstborn daughter of the Marc family and Jason's older sister. She was five years older than him and was a regular human who had been with them when their father left ten years ago.
Back then, she was twelve and had been helping out in the diner as much as possible to help their mother, just like Jason. But something happened along the way that made Janet change. Not only did Janet stop helping out in the diner, but she also began hanging out with the wrong crowd.
Nothing that Jason or their mother said managed to make Janet focus on her life again, and she even started going out with some up-and-coming musician when she turned twenty.
